Went grocery shopping today, I bought packets of Kimchi ramen and Japanese Nissin ones for boy to try... hahahhahaha ;) Training for our Japan trip!

He won't eat anything Asian and he is practically the "Chief Tester" of McDonalds around the world. It's a drag for me, as I have to find him Western foods before finding mine whenever we travel to Asia.

Look at one of our meals we ate in Bangkok, IMG_3706.jpg I had the Namtok rice which is very nice by the way...

How do you get your kids to eat local food?

Our daughter was 10 when we went to Vietnam for a holiday and she said she didn't like the food .
There was no way I was going to buy western food for her in an Asian country so I said, "Fine, eat rice then".
So she did for a few days, then decided it was too boring and switched to the local cuisine. Not a problem from then on :). BTW - her brothers had no problems with the delish food.

Don't pander to your son, he won't starve.

Oh, and tell him, "No McDonalds on this trip!"

Maybe they really don't like seafood? I dont like shellfish and strongly smelling fish, I gag when trying to eat them. Maybe start with the chicken (yaki-tori) barbequed style meats, teppanyaki style. Maybe even get them to help cook on a Barbeque plate.

I also don't eat noodles/ramen or pasta. Just don't like it.

My parents also believed in not cooking especially for the children. Subsequently I didn't each much as a child as all we would get was three (boiled to death) vegetables and meat. I loved it when the chops were burnt as it least the char gave it flavour. Consequently even as an adult I have remained thin.

It is, he goes without.

and meal times are a battle daily, with me ending in tears, most times. As you can imagine, whilst on holiday, it is hard and I am softie and so we got Macca's in BKK. Thank God for their awesome food court as I got to try out all the wonderful Thai foods :)

Do you have a local Japanese restaurant at all , I have always tried different resturants with my two ,Korean is a big hit,i am also prepared to pay for another meal if they try something different and don't like it.

Oh that's a great idea, yaktori isn't too bad and it's like grilled BBQ. My son did eat plain white rice for days in KL then he went for Maggi noodles.. I'm a terrible mum, LOL

I made chicken karaage the other day and he ate that, thinks it's because it's fried ;) I made tempura veges too and he wouldn't touch that..

Yup, he is skinny, fussy as anything and the only seafood he eats is fish fingers... that's why we are in training now for our Japanese trip.

I'm getting hungry! Lol. My dad used to love us kids to try new things but he to was always prepared to buy us something else if we didn't like it. Funny I remember as a kid trying Chinese and hating it! Now my favourite meal.

I never liked steak or much red meat growing up and had a dad, whose parents operated on the basis that if the kids don't eat for dinner, they'll get it for breakfast or lunch etc... So there were a few battles growing up...

So i can sort of see it from the perspective of the kids, although it is very frustrating when i cook up something half decent and my son flatly refuses to eat... grrrr... But yes, maybe say this is what we will be eating while we're here so deal with it... But there are different types of japanese food isn't there, deep fried fish in batter or crumbs etc, teppanyaki and don't know all the names... Is katsu the one with the crumbs?? Anyway, just do your best and if its going to be the difference between a happy or stressful holiday don't die in a ditch over it... :)

I'd take him to a teppanyaki restaurant and see what you can get out of that.

Also, don't tell him what it is ;)

But tastes do change and grow over time. As a child I was very squeamish with lots of foods, but these days I love some black pudding for breakfast and nattō for dinner ;) probably best not to try give him nattō though :p

chicken is the easy answer. there are several dishes that are quite easy on the western tongue, imo. teriyaki, yakitori and also katsu should be relatively appeasing.

I say this as someone who also is not a fan of Asian foods (which is depressing, I have tried...perhaps I need to try harder...)

I'm a fussy eater - if I don't like the smell, look or taste of something, I don't eat it. I'm what could be described as the total opposite of a vegan.

My first trip to Japan was pretty much as the OP described. I was there for a week & mainly ate western. Towards the end of the week, though, I did find a nice place just up from my hotel in Nippori that did a nice chicken.

Later the same trip, I was in the Hong Kong. I found a nice Japanese place just across the road from Central station & enjoyed the chicken I had there. I went back several days in a row.

I also enjoy Brazilian BBQ.

Can you make some Japenese food at home with him? I find Miss 4 is more willing to try new things when she helps prepare.

Oh good to know :) my kid is half Asian but will only eat western meals. Lol :) i had to bribe him to eat fried rice in Malaysia! Argh! Hopefully he grows to like asian foods one day! Sigh!

Does that mean you only eat food that comes from animal products? ;)

Had a look at your flickr, so much delicious food!
