Folks,

I've had a quick scan of previous AFF postings on travel insurance but don't see many responses on who to consider and who to avoid.

I had a really bad experience years ago with Jetset Tours and nearly lost my wife in the process - yes she almost passed away.
She now has her long service leave due and I am in the process of looking at travel insurance again.

Options are;

NRMA
RACQ
Amex

Any thoughts as to which insurers to consider fellow AFF members.
My wife will be travelling through UAE, Pakistan & Europe for 2 months.

Cheers

Rono

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Is you look up Travel Insurance Direct on here, a few people recommed that. I'd say read the PDFs very closely of whatever you are considering.

Just thinking about which company may cover terrorism related events. As we read PDFs, we could list them here.

TID: "A loss that arises directly or indirectlyfrom an act or threat of terrorism. Thisexclusion only relates to Section 2:Cancellation costs (page 16), Section 6:Travel delay (page 16) and Section 9:Special events (page 16)." https://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/pdd

Hey Rono,

I had an annual travel insurance policy with Allianz a few year back and had an accident in Colombia. They were surprisingly good. No problems at all contacting them or getting follow up. As it happens I was OK and didn't need hospitalisation or anything major. Anyways, it left me feeling good about them.

I now have AMEX annual travel insurance policy. No need to use them ... touch wood. But the premium has almost doubled this year, so I might go looking elsewhere. Good to hear how you got on with your search.

+1 and I have a TID annual policy. Just be aware that for non business trips over 30 something days you need to ring them and pay extra.

Hey Buzz, I just read this in the TID PDS.... its 38 days for leisure trips and 90 for business. Our upcoming trip is 43 days, do you have an idea of how much extra they charge?

FWIW, it's an annual policy, I consider this a low number of days for a major holiday... I get that they would seek to avoid people using this for living abroad, but still its a very small number IMHO.

We have our upcoming Europe trip covered with Southern Cross. You have to check the number of days away as we couldn't even get a quote from a few because of the time away (around 50 days). Also Himself had a medical issue requiring hospitalisation after we took out the policy - we had to pay an extra $230 to have the condition covered. AMEX won't provide cover for existing medical conditions.

We tried to get domestic insurance through Qantas earlier this year for a three-week Tassie trip, but hidden away in the PDS it showed the maximum was 15 days for hire car excess.

I've always used InsureandGo. They are good at covering the pre-existing medical conditions that I need, and they've always been quick to approve and pay out my many claims.

TheAnnual Policy offer by Columbus Direct Policy through AFF has 60 days as the max before needing extensions.

I use it as it is well priced and claims are easy.

I'm not sure what the charge is but I think it will be minimal. Luckily my next trip is 37 days.
