I don't wish to get into a battle over the pros and cons of using Facebook, but this BBC article encapsulates the reasons why I have never adopted it:

I've already decided I really don't want a digital footprint to a large degree. I signed up recently under an alias just because I wanted the stream of info for travel etc. It partly stinks because I'd like to post under myself but I shut that account down some time ago on Facebook. It's the only way I can think of around the issues. I don't need secret addresses or anything but just don't want to be easily searchable. So I have no mates on the twitter and Facebook accounts! Just follow planes, airlines and some hotels. Not into adding celebrities etc. I'm not even friends with my partner!

My partners sister commented how there was only 1 pic of a friends twins on Facebook. We stayed with those friends and I took a pic because they were so adorable but mum asked me not to put anything on Facebook and I was like "fine by me! I didn't even have Facebook!" which I didn't at the time and I'm not going to post them on the account I have currently.

I send pics directly to people that I want to share and also have the intention of sharing them when I catch up but often end up gas bagging instead.

Facebook and others are providing people with a service. Its free in the sense that you don't pay money to use it. You pay by giving them information that they can commoditise.

People shouldn't be surprised by this.

This. All my social media can be read by my boss, coworker or mum without any concerns.

And this is pretty much why if you have FB, you should be using two browsers:

One for social

The other for your shopping, travel research etc.

For example: When you visit shopping sites that have a "like us" FB button, you're not logged in on that browser, so there's no way to track your online habits.

It doesn't matter which browser you use. I've used startpage or DuckDuckGo in the past. The issue is whenever fb purchases a competitor and updates its terms and conditions, for those apps, such as Instagram and whatsapp. Everything is merged including contacts and content. I've always kept postings and audiences separated. Using free clients no longer permits that.

Another 'data point' illustrating how Facebook views your privacy and how they deal with it.

Subscribers outside of USA and Canada up to now were covered by Ireland (that is, their contract with Facebook was with a company in Ireland ...).

I use my real name on Facebook and like all forms of Social Media (AFF included) I don't post anything that I wouldn't want to be identified publicly with.

I’m the same. My Facebook is limited to real life friends and has all the security features in place. I don’t post anything personal as such nor anything that, if shared, I’d be concerned about. I don’t post frequently. I don’t log into other apps etc with my FB details nor do I allow any apps access to my profile. Instagram is open but I don’t post content there that identifies me nor is my name in it. It’s food and travel pretty much.

It astounds me how many people have their profiles on FB open, post very personal stuff or behave online in appalling manner when their real name is attached to it.

I’m really not fazed by the idea of being profiled from what I post and having advertising targeted. I don’t really pay attention to the ads anyway nor am I swayed by what social media tells me I should like.

Social media is fine - you just have to be savvy to how you use it!

I am not going to make the same with Facebook. I refuse to use Facebook.

Simple. Because of all the add tracking bots that AFF use on the forum software. Even they (AFF) don’t know what all the myriad of trackers etc on the forum actually do or collect. That’s one of the reasons I have argued with admin on the use of ad blockers on AFF. Without an ad and tracker blocker(s) you, personally, have lost control of your personal data.

And remember the nice CEO from Facebook told the US senate that Facebook track you whether you are a member of Facebook or not.
