Total solar eclipse in USA on 21 August

Anyone going to be in the US on 21 August? If so, there is an opportunity to see a total eclipse as it sweeps across the country.

“Imagine 20 Woodstock festivals occurring simultaneously across the nation,” says Michael Zeiler, an eclipse cartographer who estimates up to eight million people will travel to see the total eclipse as it moves from Oregon on the west coast beginning at 10.18am Pacific Daylight Time (August 22, 3.18am AEST) to South Carolina on the east coast beginning at 2.47pm Eastern Daylight Time (4.47am AEST).

The reality could be far greater. Twelve million people already live within the so-called totality path, which is 109km wide and 4000km long. But 200 million people — about two-thirds of the US population — live within a day’s drive of the path. Authorities admit they don’t have any idea how many people will make their way to the eclipse path, so they are issuing apocalyptic-style warnings for people to bring their own food, water and petrol.

Sounds like fun.

I saw mention that demand for rental cars is so great that at least one major company has unilaterally cancelled some prior booked cheap reservations to free up vehicles to rent at higher rates.

Carmageddon in the US is coming. Would be a good idea for Aussies to keep away.
Last time they used this term was Valentines Day and the roads got really choked up.
