I personally like to see a little more effort put into questions.

EK should be obvious. Go via ADL or PER or BNE if availability so dictates.

EY will also give you a free transfer from AUH, so is worth considering.

Then there's Lifemiles opportunities such as SYD-DEL-DXB on AI or MEL-SIN-BKK-DXB on SQ and TG.

The info you've provided is what I was after. Ty.

(What effort? I don't see what I could've added to be clearer. It's award ticket I'm interested in so no need to say when I needed to travel. I could have said routing but your answer suggests it was clear that is what I was seeking.)

I guess more detail about which airlines you have points in helps any posters to narrow down the details and not have to post details about airlines that would not apply to your situation.

Really, there are two alliances - OW and *A. I would use points/miles in an airline which is member.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Another option if no award J seats out of Oz (common) is get to BKK, HKG or SIN and go J (or F) out of there, you'll find more seats out of those destinations.

That very sensible. Thanks for pointing that out.

Not to forget skyteam.

Singapore, Emirates, Qantas, Thai, Air India, China Eastern, Cathay, Korean, Air China and Qatar will all get you from Australia to Dubai.

EK offers direct BKK-DXB return in J for aud1,538 all in. Info from Kayak.

Both sectors may be A380.

That leaves SYD-BKK return which I can book Y on QF and hope for upgrade.

Could the EK flights accrue QF miles/SCs?

Which shouldn't be possible for the single BKK-DXB sector(s) only (ie without any connecting QF service)?

To be honest I haven't looked into the possibilities of booking the QF number, but I have a feeling that is correct about the QF number.

Etihad to AUH and then take their free bus to Dubai. You might be able do do this with Virgin as well but not sure about the bus. We used the bus and it worked well.
