Today Tiger have announced SYD-MKY

"Tiger Airways continues to expand with the announcement of flights between Sydney and Mackay starting December 17. Up to five flights a week will provide around 1,800 seats between the cities.
The announcement comes a week after the airline said it will introduction four-weekly services between Melbourne and Mackay starting December 18.
Around 20 jobs will be created in Mackay as a result of the new services, which are also seen as a significant boost to tourism and the local economy.
Fares for the Sydney-Mackay service start at $99.95 one way"

Hmm, wonder what Qantas will do to compete, should make things interesting until Tiger can't sustain the services any more.



I actually want VA to start a MKY-MEL service and maybe a second daily SYD flight. It will be interesting to how there OTP in MKY is, before the groundings the it was really bad and was constantly on the local news for cancelations.

Dom,

I'm not sure how VA will respond to the SYD-MKY launch. I doubt they'll try to compete on the MKY-MEL run unless they see significant connecting traffic. For the SYD flights, well for VA it's been a relatively marginal route with E70s becoming E90s out of necessity. I'm assuming loads are good - but I am liking how there are now two direct flights per day (although one is Tiger) meaning some business can be done before flying back home - avoiding BNE. VA won't can the route - not in a million years with their Lounge up there - but it will be interesting to see what reaction they have.

Gee tiger is really pushing hard in the MKY market

Think we could see them fly somewhere else out of MKY? OOL perhaps?

QF many years ago use to fly to OOL and it was canned.

I would think maybe Tiger might fly to NTL due to mining business it could pickup.

I have a clients who have to use deathstar to NTL every week vis BNE.

I have booked SYD-MKY with Tiger for $10 each way for me wife and I in October, which is an amassing bargain , however it does seem to me that the hotel quality standards seem lower and the prices seem much higher in Mackay than all the other places i have stayed recently: Cains, Townville, Port Douglas and Airlee Beach to name a few. I expect i will stay in Airlee Beach again( Tip :the Summit apartments are good value)
unless the hoteliers of Mackay raise their game:)

Mackay has higher housing costs than most of Australia, thanks to it being a mining town, things won't change for a while!

The most recent median house price for MacKay is $525,000 and the median unit price is $360,000.

I agree, if its a holiday - hire a car and get away from Mackay to Airlie Beach or somewhere else, both the mining boom effect on accomodation and with tourism being in the pits in Queensland you would be insane to pay Mackay hotel prices when for the same or less you could stay on Airlie Beach.

Thanks Markis 10, we have always wanted to visit Mackay as it's one of the few places on the eastern seaboard we have missed,
however after doing a bit of research i think it will be a one day visit:D

Many thanks for you honest answer Eastwest 101, i feel it's a great shame that a mining boom for a relative few lucky people should dictate the cost of living for the majority of us who are either retired or Aussie Battler's
:D

Histrionics a bit, I don't think they are really dictating the cost of living. There's really nothing that's so great about Mackay over other towns around there so if you don't want to pay Mackay prices you can visit or live somewhere else fairly close for much cheaper! You could possibly feel sorry for the locals in terms of cost of living but most of them are probably spending their time rubbing their hands about the mining boom to feel too sorry for themselves.

One thing you have to do in Mackay is head up to Eungella, its about 30-40mins drive from the city, however its worth the view and the swim in the crystal clear water from the waterfall.

Welcome to Eungella, Qld

Dom,

PS, The cost of things in this town is outrages, as everyone is treated as a miner, and the customer service is shocking. Sorry to put a dampener on it. :)

Yep Mky is expensive as it is based on Miners pay rate.

I am lucky that my parents live there so when ever I am in Mky I have a bed and also a car to borrow and return with an empty fuel tank.

I wasn't saying anything about the mining industry, I was just saying that Airlie Beach is better and cheaper. It simple economics and the law of supply and demand - one part of the economy is doing alright and increasing salaries have affected real estate prices and cost of living, another part of the economy is struggling (tourism) due to lack of demand and hence prices, employment go down, a winner for the customer (you).

Good on you for taking a holiday in Australia anyway. And good on Tiger for flying there - and offereing cheap flights (its amazing what a bit of competition can do to the market!) otherwise you may not have chosen to holiday in the Mackay area in the first place. By paying much less for your flights to MKY than than what others have then you still have that money in your pocket to spend on eating out or a nicer hotel or windsurfing for instance. As others have said Eungella is nice and some people say good things about Bowen as well, but given that you are flying into MKY then Airlie Beach was my obvious pick. Others that are more local than me may have more good advice in the area.
