Yes its interesting isn't it?

One of two things may happens:

1. JQ will re-time their flights to escape the price-beat, in which case jump in if you need to go to those places.
2. TT will pull out or reschedule their flights

The TT vs JQ battle would be very interesting to see some of the stats, pax figures and OTP plus schedule changes data to see exactly who is reacting to who in situations like this.

Jnr was looking at flights MEL-MCY this morning. Return on VA is ~$280 & Jet* pretty similiar. If Jnr can snag one of these, that'll be $170 odd in the pocket.

It's a bit of a game in any case.

Sans checked luggage, even if both TT and JQ advertised fares were the same you are not only better off by 10%, you are also better off by one or more "convenience" fees when paying by CC.

I would have thought it hurts both pockets (unless the JQ flight is lightly loaded).

TT lose the customer, JQ sell the seat below the desired price (and presumably often below cost).

It may be ok for JQ if the flight has spare capacity in which case it may be "get what you can" to fill up the extras, and presumably few people do the price beat so it's a marginal $$ loss anyway.
