Here we go, finally more competition...

Homepage_AU_2Apr.gif

Commencing 3rd July they will operate 4 Daily, with different times across the week. Prices seem to be around the $68 mark.

Interested to hear from others if you think JQ will jump now on the route, otherwise I cant see their little AVV ops gaining much more traffic..

Why bother with either when you can get QF fares for $85. I'd rather pay $17 more for SC, points, QP and something to eat on board! and more availability!

It's a good thing for TR to do it, I hope they hang on for as long as possible, so QF can keep their MEL<=>SYD fares low... :)

SunStar, I can't find any fares below $68, and you have to add $5 (for nothing really) and $10 for 15kg checked baggage, given
their

1. 45 mins check in
2. (last minute) delays and cancellations history
3. 28 inch seat pitch
4. long walk to/from T4
5. non-existent customer service
6. no food/drinks/ff pts
7. strict over weight luggage policy

I will give them a miss.

Their MEL<=>SYD product is worth around $50 MAX in this day and age I think...

Is it April Fools day??

No, this is good, keep the others competitive. Of course, agree with red e-deal only $10-15 more, why bother?

Most flights (checking random dates in July) are $78 not $68 (normal fare $93)

Plus $5 seat selection ($25 for exit row)
PLus $10 for a 15kg bag / $20 for 20kg / $35 for 25kg / $70 for 30kg
or $15/kg at the airport over this amount

Plus $5 convenience fee (for epayments)

It is interesting that their initial pricing of $78+5+20 ~$110
is almost the same as QF prices...

Why would they think that the MEL<=>SYD punters would have the expectation that their TR product is at the same quality as QF is beyond me. (unless they really like the A320 and MEL T4)

I guess Tiger dosn't price their fares in accordance to JQ/DJ/QF's sales. Considering DJ have $69 sale, and even JQ have $39, are they mad?

But when all the sales finish, Tiger has $68, JQ have $69 ex AVV, DJ have $99 and QF have something above $100+...Mabye they are trying to actually make some money on the route!

and as in True Tiger Style, the price will be up and down week after week.... I would wait, as I highly antipicipate them going below $68 before launch! Just like what happend when they announced the Adelaide hub, $70 opening fare, free seats the next, $50 the next week..

I'd agree with the others re the minimal pricing difference. I see this as a plea to QF suggesting the dont need to let JQ on the route to bugger it for everyone.
The schedule looks like they couldnt get any decent slots in SYD. Interesting to see where they get gates and checkin counters with not much space between JQ and DJ in T2. Will the aircraft also be standoff ala QFLink??? lots more questions to be answered .But as sure as the sun come up tomorrow there will be single digit fares on the horizon

It will certainly be interesting to see what JQ's response will be. Pre Tiger, JQ said that the 1x MEL-PER and 1 x AVV-PER flights would become 2x AVV-PER. After Tiger arrived on the scene, it actually became 2 x MEL-PER.

There are some "secret" advantages of JQ over TR known by their target customers. I think JQ know about it but they prefer not to advertise or cancel these benefits.. ..

1. Because you can print off BPs at home for JQ domestic flights and just rock up to the gate, anyone with the BP can get on the flight, this is the same as free name change.

2. Free seating allocation for JQ (except ER exit rows)

3. (for pax with carry on only) Now the most important part, un-limited carry on luggage weight (as long as you can take it yourself comfortably) because you never need to go near the check in desk. For TR they will check and weight and charge for any over-limit harshly.

4. (for pax with carry on only) JQ pax can just rock up to the gate before the last boarding call is made, no need for the 45 mins check in limit.

Wow, I am impressed but wonder how long they will last.

Why do all LCCs love the plus for this, plus for that, plus for the other? Please just give me one all inclusive price so I know what I am paying up front without conning me later. For others that do not use certain facilities then give them a refund ot implement a less for this, less for that, less for the other.

I would not take TT or JQ at $29 let alone $49. I would rather fly QF at $85, and know I will get to my destinations withing a couple of hours of schedule, than risk flying TT or JQ.

I totally agree that competition is good but I am eternally grateful that full cost legacy carriers are still around on domestic routes to get us to our destinations close to expectations....

Yes I am unlikely to consider a true LCC except in special circumstances.I will be taking Air Asia BKK-coughet in May as the saving for the 2 of us was ~$400.Looking in 2 weeks time and finding a TT $68 fare I could get a similiar timed DJ flight for $85 with no blue zone seats gone suggesting if by myself a reasonable chance of one if I turned up early then the total fare would have been $15 cheaper on DJ.
And then again some of us are just picky when it comes to on board food-

Seems when the the "extra" costs are factored in the LCC aren't so LC, for the most part can get cheaper "all inclusive" fares with QF on routes that the LCC and QF serve.

It's no competition if Paper Tiger don't provide service. This mob don't understand the Australian market because apart from its operations [and who knows] the rest of the company is run out of Singapore. And those who have picked up on the costs issue are right: their fares [apart from the short term stunts] are little different from the rest.

Sydney travellers are not going to use Paper Tiger when they discover they have to make an STD call to a Melbourne number, which is engaged most of the time, and if they're lucky to get through, they'll have to endure a confusing 1 1/4 minute message and the phone goes dead [as it transfers to a SE Asian call centre?]. And no email contact or any other form of contact on their webpage!

There is no customer service operation in Australia for Paper Tiger! After a lot of detective work I finally rang their media person and got some response. And there is a Customer Service Officer - run off her feet, poor thing - in Singapore.

If you do toss the dice for this operation, the customer service email is [email protected].

Finally, an airline that closes its check-in counter at 45 minutes before scheduled departure, whether or not there is a queue, is hardly going to attract business and other regular travellers between Melbourne and Sydney.

Good luck!

No, I just don't think their management - despite the Australian CEO and MD and media contact - understands the Australian market. Not the leisure market, nor the business market.

(apologies in advance for possibly quoting out of context)

Playing the devil's advocate here for the moment, but I've noticed a recurring theme - comparing TR to QF et. al. is like comparing apples and oranges. Sure, they both fly planes with two jet engines, but that's about where the similarities stop. Criticizing TR for not being more like QF seems a little silly to me .. :)

Tiger aren't trying to get the business crowd, they're trying to get the folk who look at the sticker price and not much else. Ryanair have made a fortune out of that section of the market, so more power to Tiger for giving it a go. It's more that they're providing an alternative rather than competition - I'm certainly not going to fly with them (and I'm guessing most people here are the same), but given a good sale I'm sure they'll get plenty of takers.

Sydney travellers are not going to use Paper Tiger…
You are wrong, please go and stand at the gate when their 1st flight departs and see if any passengers get onboard. What a silly comment to make. (The only possible valid argument here, is that due to operating out of a MEL base, they won't pick up BFOD morning business traffic SYD-MEL.)

This mob don't understand the Australian market…
This mob, runs the only airline in Australia that is currently expanding services! AND I can only imagine how low they have screwed down MacAirport on fees/charges... It will be interesting to see how much fares cost on their next rotation of their "pay fees/charges only promotion".

And Sunstar320 has a much better handle of market pricing, than some of the propaganda merchants who posted prior. There is well over a 33%price difference between QF (standard lead in, $105) and TT (standard lead in, $68).

comint, I am sure when you get to the last page the TR fare will become
$93, which is $68 + $5 (rip off credit card fee) + $20 (20kg checked baggage). It is close to the QF fare. People who have booked with TR before will know. TR's lead in fee has to be less than $30 to attract people....

The cheapest QF MEL=>SYD fare I have booked is $69 from the sale a while ago, and QF's product is far superior.

I am sure the unfortunate victim of this TR MEL<=>SYD is the NSW department of fair trading, which are going to receive a lot of calls / letters !

As a note, IMO RyanAir (and other LCCs) are successful in Europe because all the other full service alternative are at least 2-3 times their price, the market experience over there is that pax will always book full service provider if their price are closer !

The credit card fee is charged by all airlines, if you use a credit card to pay. So if you pay by CC to fly QF, $7.70 is added to your bill. (I do, however, think that it is problematic that some airlines don't offer alternate payment options.)

If I am travelling for the day or overnight, I do not check bags, and I do not like subsidising those who do! (7kg is a very tight allowance though, and does effect my decision making.)
