Considering this was announced last Aug, pretty poor not to have it sorted before the Easter peak.
In fact normally in such cases they have to disclose on new routes seats sold are"subject to regulatory approval".Wonder when they were going to get it?
Even though most of the Bali traffic commences in Aust it seems pretty amateurish not to have other end of route approvals in place.

Someone's forgotten to lodge the paperwork on time :(
Really poor oversight by VA/TT that inevitably has not got the dream run they were hoping to stop the bleeding of money on the route.
 
I know Kevin Kavanagh - I may ask him how the experience has been dealing with it.

I don't know about that - Indonesian bureacracy seems to run on its own time, so its possible that the Indonesian regulator is the one dragging the chain in this case.

Really?

An airline should not commence operations on a particular route until confirmation from the relevant aviation authorities that they have correct authorisation to set down and pickup passengers.
To do so before they have been given the official OK will end up being messy.
VA/TT rushed in to stop the financial bleeding on the MEL/ADL/PER > DPS routes too quickly it seems.

VA had problems getting the 'US bureaucracy' to approve their US flights so perhaps the common denominator here is VA ;)

I remember they were forced to book their pax onto Qantas, the passengers won in a big way!

Isn't this why they would sell the tickets as being subject to regulatory approval though? So they can open a route with the prospect of it being commercially viable by the time the first flight departs.

I remember many people in 2008 getting a bargain to fly VA with the introductory fares, but having to fly QF to LAX due to VA not having final approval on time.

Incorrect Cool Cat Phil, the route had been approved, Boeing Machinists were on strike delaying the delivery of the 777s.

VA advertised a route for sale and they could not fulfil their obligations in getting passengers to their destination. Boeing mechanics on strike or not having correct authorisation, the crux of this issue is VA failed to deliver the service on time.

Yep. I was one of those affected - booked on QF because they didn't have any frames.

This is actually the second time VA has been involved in a similar case with the Indonesian authorities. When VA rebranded from Pacific Blue to Virgin Australia, there were similar issues with the Indonesian Authorities too regarding the rebrand.

In all things regulatory, time is the enemy. Either to much or too little.

Indonesian bureaucracy is well known for running on its own time, unless certain arrangements are made to speed things up. ;) Kudos to VA if that is the case and they're are not playing the game.
 
something with this story does not add up. My understanding is that TT are only restricted in selling tickets originating in Bali. There is no such restriction on selling return tickets originating in Australia . I am sure that you need a return or ticket out of Bali on entry, so most people would have a TT return ticket.... does not explain the empty return opps

I am wondering myself. Again newspaper journalists are hopeless at writing a story that makes sense.

So return fares OZ-DPS-OZ are Ok, as are OZ-DPS one way.
but not DPS-OZ one way.

As a result they cancelled some flights which also affected the OZ-DPS-OZ passengers. I would not have thought that there were so many one way DPS-OZ tickets on the cancelled flights.

They might have a ticket on JQ there and TT back. DPS fares are usually advertised one way

Learn something new everyday!

So the passengers buying one ways instead of returns are doing it to chase the lowest fare and maybe have some flexibility in their sojourn though I would think that would be bookended by the accomodation.

If so another example why cheapest does not always mean best.

All experiences (whether LCC or not) are really only fine until its not. Customers are really only one cancellation away from blowing a fuse. Unfortunately people just don't seem to be able to understand that.
