Tiger announces daily MEL-CNS service

MEL-DNS? Did they open up a cheap airport at Daintree instead of Cairns? :p

That is interesting indeed; I wonder how people on either side of the route will react to TT operating the route. The timing looks pretty horrid, however.

The timing of the flights looks horrible. The news article mentions 1 flight a day but also states

Cairns.com.au said:
Using Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 seats, the airline has the capacity to bring more than 2500 people a week to Cairns.
By my calculations 7 x 180 = 1260. Is the article missing a second flight scheduled?

Rugged timing indeed.
"The flights will leave Melbourne at 9pm and arrive at 12.25am and return at 12.55am to touch down in Melbourne at 4.20am."

I guess it could suit someone with work commitments before and after their holiday but awful for hotel access.

By their schedule it's only one flight a day into the foreseeable future so the 2500 looks like sloppy reporting.

I wouldn't be overly relying on the Tiger Info sheet on Cairns either. It lists places, such as Johnnos Blues Bar and Verdi's, that closed up to 3 years ago.

I guess 2500 should be to and from CNS, as that seems close enough to double what 7*180 is.

The return timing to MEL looks horrible.

Perhaps Tiger to CNS and then QF/Jetstar back to MEL would be travel at more bearable hours of the day?

.

But it's geared to be effective utilisation of the aircraft, not pax convenience. This means it can be back in MEL ready for an 0600 flight to SYD/OOL/BNE/ADL/wherever. TT are trying to keep the a/c in the air 24hrs/day. :-|

And, as we know, one small problem and the whole network can be affected.

As someone else said, it's Tiger trying to improve their utilization of planes. But, that's only good if someone wants to actually use the service and they are covering some costs.

The times do look rather horrid.

JQ website today - Cairns on Sale........... and with TT to Avalon - Sale with JQ -SYD
many have said...times are very torrid and if compared to JQ, for a little extra money TT is not even an option......
aircraft utilisation and not passenger convenience someone said - is 100% correct - they have to keep their planes in the air a very long time..........
problem with this lot (TT) is like all the ports they go to...... they blow in, prostitute the port with cheap fares and when it does not suit them, they bow out usually saying port fees to expensive for a budget carrier...... AKA........ DARWIN!

With Avalon, back your last dollar, they will do near exact times as JQ to Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney....oh yes......... they mention Broome also which JQ will flood capacity if they make a move to Broome

and as a poster said also....... if a plane goes tech......so much for it making the 6am departure to somewhere and so much for the pax sitting in Cairns waiting to get to melbourne........

the other thing with Cairns..........
TT has since their inception, tried to get an international route out of Cairns to Asia - principally TT Singapore. In the reverse, Asian tourists arrive in Cairns and pick up the domestic TT service....
only problem here is that the slots they pick up offer terrible times and there is NO way and they even adveetise it themselves, no connection reliability.........

Will Cairns last?....... AKA........ Newcastle.........Darwin.........Alice Springs......
they offer an alternative but you cannot rely on them being there to offer the route in 12 months time!! - DJ/QF/JQ do.......

Main reason for the horrid timings is for the limited amount of aircraft that is available during the day. Obviously Tullamarine couldn't find anymore ways to fit in more A320's so Tiger is forced to fit in whatever they can.

Avalon will come, move some frequencies between the two and allow more stronger routes/new routes to be launched from Tullamarine.

Also heard about a BNE base next year which is to offset alot of Tullamarine flying (MEL-BNE), as its the only way to get more room in MEL. Another way they have been doing it is using Adelaide based aircraft to run through Melbourne and then onward to somewhere before returning.

Will Cairns last?....... AKA........ Newcastle.........Darwin.........Alice Springs......
It must be more economical to fly it to Cairns and back rather than just sitting on the ground overnight so I think it will last.

Aah, I thought Alice Springs was still part of the network (ex-MEL), as it has almost from the beginning only the short lived ASP-ADL services that have been canned.

Erm.... where is Tiger going to board at CNS. From my regular experience and rechecking the airport diagram, there are only 5 airbridges at the CNS Dom, excepting the long haul to walk to the QF Crash 8's ramp.

I know that Tiger can't even spell "airbridge" and wouldn't be put off by even bussing their pax across from the GA, but there ain't much room at the gates when QF, JQ and DJ are in town.:?::?:

How many of the five airbridges are in use between 0025 and 0055 hrs ?

Richard.

One wonders if at that time of the morning TT could get Pax to walk to the far end of the runway to board (save fuel taxiing)....:D

Oh dear....

What will they do next, buy a few Q300/400 series and take on QF in regional QLD, that would be a sight to see:D
