I'm flying PER-MEL-LAX-YVR all with QF on a single PNR. I'll be overnighting in MEL to break up the trip.

Will it be possible to through check my baggage to PER to the final destination or will I need to recover it and recheck in MEL? If so, will I be able to recheck it on arrival in MEL or will I have to wait till the next day?

I don't see why you couldn't check it all the way through at PER.

If for some reason you can't check it all the way through and they check it only to MEL, then you'll need to wait the next day to check it in at the international terminal.

I think technically your baggage may only remain with the airline at the airport if you do so you're probably not likely to have much luck. However, if you're on the circa 5pm PER-MEL departure and the MEL-LAX flight is early, you might have half a chance.

(I don't know what time QF93 departs, but I can tell you the time the solitary daily QF international ex-PER departs!)

Just to round this off, I wasn't able to check bags through to YVR.

Apparently, there's rule that only allows a 6 hour gap between flights. I'm guessing that this affects only DOM to INT transfers.

I'm sure I've had a longer transit than that before. Doesn't make much sense when QF are now extending check-in times at SYD.

Doesn't matter, maybe it's an inconsistency thing again.

My experience has been Qantas will not check baggage if doing and overnight transit in an oz port, even if arrive last flight in, and depart early next morning.

Would be good to know official policy.

If you are overnighting in MEL then you must collect your bags after arriving off the PER flight.

The next day you would be able to check your bags MEL/xLAX/YVR however despite bags being tagged to YVR they will still come off the luggage carousel at LAX where you will be required to clear customs and immigration.

You can re-deposit your bag at the bag drop area within TBIT before making your way to the terminal for your next flight eg if travelling on AS LAX/YVR you should have received your boarding pass when you checked in at MEL so you would make your way directly to Terminal 6 & head straight through the TSA screening point then to your departure gate.
