After experiencing the utter mediocrity of the SYD and MEL QPs and J lounges post-Accor takeover, where even the salami slices are gone in favour of very ordinary cheese and cheap standard ham an a toaster machine, I want to say that the CBR J experience today was far better for the following reasons:

  • As soon as I entered, a staff member offered me a drink. Someone else came by offering to make me a toasted sandwich or introduce the food. Then when I went by the buffet, another person walked me through and even poured my soup for me while I helped myself to serving something else. Fantastic lounge service! (or maybe the rumours about young handsome single male travellers getting better service from female airline staff are true :p)
  • The soup was fantastic (it was some type of corn soup, not the standard cream of corn though) - I especially appreciated being asked if I wanted croutons added
  • When looking at the sandwich section, I commented to one of the staff that it was a better spread of fillings than I saw in SYD earlier today. She then mentioned they also had red onion in stock and could bring some out if I wanted.
  • The view from the lounge and the ambience is generally very nice, much like the rest of the new CBR terminal.

Are these staff Accor or from somewhere else?

in sydney now they have these rather nice hot rolls of pulled pork, lettuce onion and pickled cucumber. They are being assembled live at the buffet by staff. Very nice. There is a few little enhancements to the presentation too. Plus eqpiure have a wine tasting machine here where you pay in points to try some wines? I dont know if thats new or not... but I dont remember it before.

Fantastic lounge service!

Agree with the service! And I think there was a LOT of garlic in that soup. :)

I havent been to the CBR J lounge since June (only SG), but isnt the view just onto the parking terminal versus the airside view from the QP?

Yes, but it's one of the best views of the parking terminal. ;)

It is startlingly good in CBR J, poor Melbourne is just plain woeful. Sydney is hardly a massive step up either. Hope they did more than just steam clean the carpets when the latter two re-open haha.

CBR is just great, what a J lounge should be like. And the Molton Brown in the bathrooms is a really nice touch. The CBR QP is pretty good too, how I remember Flight Deck in the old days!

Master FM and Mr FM flew up to Sydney for the day and had breakfast in the J lounge in Canberra. Mr FM has just come home raving about the fantastic service in Canberra (and he is generally a fairly negative sort of person). I read him the original post on this thread and he says he totally agrees - the best experience he has had in a domestic lounge in many years.... I am looking forward to experiencing it when we fly to Melbourne in a few weeks!

The CBR J lounge is my fav domestic lounge by far!

It's one of the main reasons I stick with QF > VA actually

Next visit a few months away :D then many trips over Winter for the ski season

Totally agree. It seems that the CBR lounges are delivering an extra level of service. I flew twice during the J lounge shut down so had to slum in in the QP and they had 'table service', asking me if I wanted coffee as soon as I walked in. First I thought that it was because of the J lounge shutdown, but my colleague who was in the QF today said that she received the same service today (J lounge just opened yesterday). Then when we moved to the J lounge the service was phenomenal!

According to the rest of Australia we Canberrans live in some fantasy world where everything is handed to us on a platter so why should the lounge be any different?

I am surprised some wag hasn't suggested that the reason everyone is happy in the CBR lounge is because they are leaving the place!!!

seriously, this weekend marks 10 years since I moved to Canberra and while I sometimes miss Melbourne it was definitely the right move for me.
