Flying LAX-SYD tonight on QF108. Requested seat 46C (exit row) about 3 weeks ago, and it was showing on my profile right up to a day before check-in.

I check-in 10 hours before the flight in Kansas City (because I still had MCI-DFW and DFW-LAX to get through) and get allocated...seat 72D. :-|

AA lady said she couldn't do anything, and of course being under 24hrs QF couldn't do anything over the phone. So a nervous wait until I got to LAX....

Decided to ask the QF desk @ T4 (rather than TBIT) as I've found them very helpful in the past. Spoke to a lovely Aussie girl who said "Sorry, all exit rows gone...I might be able to give you a bulkhead, maybe..but the flight is very full."

I understand sometimes there can be a need for taller, disabled etc.. pax to use the exit rows, but surely if I pre-allocate weeks out, and check-in 10hrs before, they could at least move me to another exit row seat (heck, I'd even take 46A!)

Anyway, she went off for a few minutes and came back with "How about an upgrade to Business?"

:D :D :D

Ahh Qantas, how I love you. An op-up (from Discount Y no less) to Business on one of the hardest routes for upgrades. Couple this with my points upgrade to J on the SYD-LAX sector (A380), and this has been a pretty good trip flights-wise.

Anyway, just thought I'd share as I know people love op-up stories. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

Now that's the sort of thing you tell the grandkids about !:)

In the words of the prisoner in Life Of Brian, "You lucky lucky b@st@rd"

Do you think Y was full?

Just wondering whether they were looking to op-up someone anyway, or whether you were extra lucky!

Way to go!
But no point buying a lotto entry-your lucks been used.

Happened to me back in June last year where I had 29C pre-allocated for a few months and then found on the morning of the flight I was in 26J.

Unfortunately no op-up was offered but finally managed to get 29C back only to be given an in flight op up as the IFE was not working. ;)

They said Y was completely full. J looked entirely full too, from what I could see.

I wonder if being so far down the back had anything to do with it? i.e. if I was in say, row 50 - would they have just said "too bad", but because they usually don't have Platinums flying so far down the back, they decided to upgrade me?

Who knows....all I know is, it was a very comfy flight. :D

Ha. An op-up's an op-up I s'pose!

Nice going Febs! You seem to have an uncanny ability to score op-ups and quick reroutings.

well done, i just hope my Y to J upgrade for QF31 on 13th March succeeds. I am happy to part with the 40K points but an op-up would be better. This trip will be interesting as I know generally speaking upgrades are usually assigned under 24 hours but can come as late as 5 hours or even later. I have a AKL-SYD that arrives at 10.30am that morning and then have a 7 hr wait for the SYD-SIN leg on the A380. it would be nice to have it confirmed at AKL but would be also nice if I got the call at the F lounge for my new BP. Either way I have a great seat allocated (touch wood I do nto lose it) in case I have to travel in the class paid for. 7hs in the F lounge, oh what should I do.

That looks like a classic oversell situation, with cabins rolling fwd as required.
The moral of the story may be that when you suspect an oversell, ask what other seats are available...
