The view from my "office"

Does anyone here read 'willow' ? :)
Well, looking at the thickness of the pieces they are not the fine china of today. I have a couple of Japanese cups/saucers from 1800s which are much thicker than modern pieces. As I understand it most of the Blue & White that was produced 200 years ago came from China. Perhaps these items started out as ballast on ships returning to England from the Far East, and then accompanied settlers on the journey back here. Likely very well travelled.

Thanks. I haven't done any reading on it yet, but I guess I'll have to get into it, although I'm hoping the Decorative Arts guy at the Tas Museum and Art Gallery might be able to tell me something. There are only fragments, unfortunately, but a fair few of them.

Actually, a quick Google (!) tells me that there was English Willow being mass produced (transfer 'painted') by 1800, and this would be the most likely source - just taken to and sold in Van Diemen's Land. This was the site of a very humble (but prominent) farmer, maybe 20 years in huts there and finding 'china' was a bit of a surprise!!

It’s on this weekend. We didn’t go downtown last night but could hear the crackers going off. Just on the way back from a long day in the Daintree now but the word is that restos will be a zoo tonight, so will give downtown a miss until tomorrow night.

Good idea mate. Did you enjoy the Daintree trip?

Sure did, mate.

Highly recommended. It’s not WH-listed for no reason - but the complexities of rain forests are perhaps not as easily observed as other ecosystems, so they generally don’t appear as ‘pretty’, but there is a lot going on.

Managed to get a quick sighting of a Cassowary. Not sufficient to photograph, but it was a big win. 👍

Definitley a special part of the world. I've only seen a Cassowary once in my last three trips 🏆 Glad you had a good day!

Today was a visit to Henstridge Airfield, pretty much on the border of Somerset and Dorset and some flying of a different kind...... in a chopper.

We stayed overnight in Shaftesbury beforehand, so had a wander around the village and a full English breakfast prior to our lunchtime flight.
