The view from my "office"

We are just back from three nights down in the South West of W.A. - with wi-fi too slow to post images.

Firstly some stingrays from Hamelin Bay. They are incredibly calm and curious - hoping for a feed of fish. They are protected in this area.

The larger one was over a metre from wingtip to wingtip

You can see how close to shore they come.

As part of the ongoing efforts of AFF members to take the perfect sunset picture, here are some shot across the waters of Geographe Bay with the sun sinking behind Cape Naturaliste. There was lots of smoke in the sky from controlled burns.

(These names, like Hamelin Bay, were all given by the French Expedition under Nicolas Baudin in 1801. Other places he named include Esperance and the Fleurieu Peninsula - plus dozens more.)

As the sun was going down the moon was rising. The jetty and clouds, lit by the setting sun.

At the 9/11 Memorial is this huge wall of representations of how blue the sky was the morning the planes hit. Of interest, behind this wall is the New York Examiners area which still has some 7500 body parts that they are waiting to reconcile with DNA profiles.
There were 21,000 body parts earlier. They realise that some will never be repatriated to their families.

The 9/11 Memorial is one of the worlds best museums I think.

[off topic rant]
I know the website for the memorial uses it, and it is common parlance, but I think it is atrocious that such a dreadful terrorist attack is reduced to a three digit number - "9/11". Nearly 3,000 people died - and more than 400 of them were my fellow emergency service workers.

The NYFD (retired), docent was very interesting on his experiences going in after the attack, and afterward. The first responders are still dying from the after effects of their work.

[ more OTT ] Possibly but that date is treated with such reverence and is known by pretty much everyone throughout the world. So in this case an exception to the “known by a number” might be in order. And the USA values its service people (especially Fire service) incredibly well, we just mentioned this yesterday, so maybe it’s appropriate? [Back to OT]

We travelled to NY just a couple of years later and the original memorial site was in place. Must return and pay respect.

My trip to MEL last week...

Seated, awaiting take-off at BNE with view to the airport hotels

Unfortunately there was light rain at take-off otherwise would have had some great landing photos as we waited to enter the runway. But on the way up, looking down the Brisbane River to Moreton Bay

I love breaking through the clouds and seeing them from atop. Always sunny up here:

After landing in MEL, we snuck ahead of this jet - very imposing sight to see lined up and ready to fly

Approaching MEL on short final, obligatory engine and wing shot - doing what they need to do:
