15 years since my last visit, and all about people — no business or touristy stuff.

Remains the most chaotic, vibrant, welcoming, heartbreaking and inspirational city I’ve had the privilege of spending time in.

My view’s a bit domestic this evening.

Right, so no gin and used the last of the vodka in pre dinner drinks. What to do? Pop down to Ostani of course for a couple of post dinner beverages. The house on the hill is in session so lots of staffers around and very busy but no problem, gives it atmosphere.

It’s a Charlie Chaplin ‘cos I like apricot. :)

The dilemma of a short (<6h) overnight flight in a good premium cabin? Get a bit of sleep or take advantage of the service offerings - but hard to do both comprehensively.

You opted for sleep it appears? I trust a Krug nightcap or two helped the slumber...
I had a single Dom and one of each of the 2 reds then retired. I made use of the lounge beforehand = the Lufthansa Senators Lounge was better than the SilverKris) and The Private Room on arrival.

Our last evening in Longyearbyen started with dinner in the Barentz Pub & Spiseri at the Radisson Blue Polar Hotel. Everything on Svalbard is expensive, but the Søndaglam (Sunday lamb) special was reasonable at NOK189 ($32). Actually the rack of lamb was melt-in-the-mouth delicious!

After dinner it was time for “after sunset” photography on the first clear sky night.

We walked to the edge of town and set up in the hope that the Aurora Borealis would make an appearance, which it indeed did after several hours waiting in the snow at -8 degrees. There was a fantastic display for about 45 minutes.

My ordinary camera did hardly register anything, but my son, with his professional gear, shot lots of great photos.

From Longyearbyen we took an SAS flight to Tromsø in North Norway, where we stayed for two nights. Then we drove to Reine in Lofoten with an overnight stop in Sørvågen. Some views from our offices:

Tromsø, a nice 2nd floor studio apartment in the Enter City Hotel, with a super view!

Sørvågen: view from the loft of our cabin on a little lake.
