The last flight on Australia's busiest international route

Well, after a stressful week trying to work out exactly what to do, the decision that all international arriving passengers will be bused to accommodation for two weeks from midnight, hastened the decision to temporarily return to Australia, working remotely for the time being (well continuing to work remotely, like I have been for the last two weeks in my Singapore apartment anyway).

I have checked in, sitting here at Changi Airport, waiting for SQ 227, the last flight from of SIN to MEL, at least for the foreseeable future. In 2019, this was the busiest international route out of Australia, with almost 4,500 passengers each day flying the route in one direction or the other.

We turned up at the First Class check in area about 2 hours after our flight was due to depart due to delay. (even though flying economy, courtesy of my partners status we can use this checkin area). They were expecting us. We were advised that the flight was delayed 5 hours as they were carrying a second set of crew to operate the return flight, and they wouldn't be disembarking at MEL, so the plane would turn around straight away.

They also told us that it would closing tomorrow evening, for the first time ever. I almost had a tear in my eye as the 6 or 7 staff bid us farewell. Any aviation enthusiast I am sure would feel the same.

We had our temperatures checked, and passed quickly through immigration. This is the scene that awaited us airside.

Strangely, we are departing from gate C22 tonight - in the adjacent Terminal 1. I am not sure why. Maybe because if the two previous departures - both BA - from C22 and C23, and they are keeping the activity in the same area.


Prior to this flight there were 3 flights to LHR - BA 16 at 22:55, BA18 at 23:15 and SQ 322 at 23:45. Then KL 836 to AMS at 01:35. Then our flight at 03:15 and next flight SQ214 at 07:40.

Walking through the terminal to the distant gate we passed by many staff but no other passengers. It was ever so quiet. Two duty free stores open (1 for alcohol, 2 for others), times bookstore and a coffee place.

Now on board. Everyone has 3 seats to themselves - and 1/3 of the rows completely empty, although it looks like the return flight is almost full in all classes.

In light of the late departure we were handed SIN-SYD menu, a light snack after departure and full breakfast closer to landing.

I expect it should be a quick taxi ... no waiting for ATC clearance I imagine!

Will be interesting to hear how the meals turned out. On BA's flights pax in all classes were given the same thing - a sandwich + kit kat + granloa bar. No drinks except tea, coffee and water. That was leaving both SYD and SIN.

I wonder if SQ's catering is still the same?
