The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Card!)

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Does any one know with this card (or AMEX in general) - if you don't have enough limit to pay a bill, but put your card in credit - will AMEX allow you to use the whole credit, or do they limit it to the actual card spending limit?

For example - if my limit is $1000. I then transfer an extra $200 to the card. Can I pay a $1200 bill, or will AMEX decline based on the actual $1k limit?
(apologies for going slightly off topic).

Officially: You're not supposed to put your card in credit. I've read of cases of AMEX in the US cancelling peoples accounts for such activity.

Anecdotally: I've accidentally overpaid my account here by a small amount (couple of hundred dollars) a few times, nothing happened. I wouldn't go putting it thousands into credit.

You can use whatever cash you have in the account. So your $1200 bill will be fine.

My AMEX cards are perpetually in credit. No problems at all with this.

If Amex works like any other card u should be able to . FYI u can go slightly over your limit with Amex

Re: The Explorer Credit Card (New AMEX Ca

Actually I asked Amex , they didn't have a problem . Said they could send me a cheque for excess amount if I wanted .

If you are really are paranoid why don't you pay half the bill. Put funds in. And then pay again

Great, thanks for the responses!

Not an option unfortunately - very primitive direct debit setup, can't be paid in halves/in advance...

Sometimes they do lock the account for being in too much credit. Happened to me, but it was about 10 years ago.

Interesting offer popped up on my Explorer some time in the past couple of days:

9.99% p.a. for 6 monthsLOW RATE FOR 6 MONTHS
Take advantage of this low rate on new purchases
You're invited to enrol for a promotional low interest rate for 6 months of 9.99% p.a. on new purchases on your Card. Simply enrol by the Expiry Date mentioned. This low rate is available from the date of your enrolment. Once enrolled, you can take advantage of this great rate for your new purchases including holiday season shopping, larger purchases you’ve been thinking of or simply your everyday essentials. It’s just another way we can thank you for your loyalty.

I don't carry a balance from month to month, so I don't think this will have any impact on me financially, but hey, for the next six months at least, my Explorer is a low-rate, high-rewards credit card :p

with tje default rate being 20%, this is half price, and if you are carrying a balance its good, but if you ar ecarrying a balance it does defeat the purpose of collecting points if youa re paying interest, in my opinion

Read over the last 50 pages or so so it appears AMEX are really clamping down on enforcing the one bonus per card?

Also noticed that it now may also be both Charge and normal credit cards?
Currently looking at applying for a second card for the the other half who holds a Plat Charge.

I think this is correct. 18 month period appears to be being enforced.

Don't forget about the David Jones AMEX card though, where it does not matter if you have held another AMEX in the past 18 months (except if it was another David Jones AMEX card).

Thanks, this is interesting. Hopefully I can find a nice offer. Just about the cancel the Edge.

I got the same offer and first thought was "wow, nice deal" and then quickly followed up with "hang on - I don't pay interest!"

I prefer my Westpac Card which gave me 0% (with not set up %) on $43K for 18 months.

Has anyone recently received the bonus points for referring a friends application inspite of the referree being an existing card holder ? As per their terms if they are an existing card holder you are not entitled but bonus points have been awarded upto a month ago ? Does this loophole still exist ?any personal experiences ?

I can confirm this card can't be used for business purposes / large transactions.

Credit Limit: $9k
Available Balance: $9k

My desired transaction amount is $20k. So I put $11k on the card. Available Balance is now $20k.

When put through $20k, the transaction was declined. I rang AMEX and they said I can't spend more than $9k in a given month, they stated this a legislation they need to follow and that other banks shouldn't allow it either. My Westpac allows me to do this just fine. They waived it once for me and approved the $20k but said a note was put on file so I couldn't do it again. Quite sad as my Westpac Bus Plat only yields 1.2 SQ points per $.

Your limit can't be spent in a month on business or at all?

I easily have spent 3 times my limit in a month.
I just kept on topping up funds

At all according to AMEX. That is - you can't go over your limit in one transaction. I may be wrong here and have been given the wrong advice.

I'm always over my limit but admittedly never done a transaction the size of my limit.
So maybe there right

You can't not deposit money into your AMEX card before you used all of your limit, the operator did not make it clear due to AMEX is not a financial institution like big 4 that can take the deposit. In your case, you just need to spend your 9K credit first, then bpay the same amount back to your card, and once the payment is cleared, then you can spend that amount again, there're no limit times you can do within a statement cycle.
