I think this may be the dumbest (Or simplest) question I've asked, so apologies in advance :). What happens when you don't requalify for your status, and potentially don't re-qualify even for silver? Is it a brutal thud straight back to Bronse, or are you politely booted to the level below - eg if not re-qualifying for gold (And don't re-qualify for silver either), do you slip back to Silver the next year?

Most of my current flying is for work, and there is always the possibility I could go 9 months without a single flight so i may need to plan ahead.

Cheers Guys!

Its referred around here as a "soft landing", generally you drop down one level, but at the end of the day QF have the ultimate say as its an unpublished benefit from QF.

It seems customary for Qantas to provide the so called "soft landing", but there is also the possibility that they may offer you a virtual go-around. By that I mean they may give you a complementary qualification so that you retain Gold. There doesn't seem to be any science behind this and if you do get lucky it is invariably a once-off, but I am crossing my fingers that Qantas are in a good mood this year because I may fall short myself.

There is also the option that Red Roo alludes to - you can contact QFF and explain your circumstances. It really helps to have a good story backed up by some forward bookings, and QFF sometimes instigate the same conversation close to your qualification date.

In my case I have been SG for 4 years, am about to flop over the line to LTS, have 6 months QC membership still in hand, and should only be around 100 SC short of re-qualifying come my anniversary. But why do the words "Pride" and "Fall" keep flitting through my head?

QF have been known to 'comp' your status. The experts are out on what generates this generosity, but as a rule from what we can gather it'll be based on past flying. eg if you earned 1800 SC's for 2-3 years in a row, and then fell a little short in year 4, it's likely they'll offer you a 'one time' re-qualification 'in recognition of your past loyalty'. They state clearly it's once off and you will then need to re-qualify in the next period. Anecdotal evidence would suggest that it's not truly once-off, it's just that you have to re-qualify the next year, and in the future, they have been known to offer it again (once again though, it'll be based on past flying averages).

They also sometimes will send, around 3 months out, a 'please explain' letter asking you to detail your planned flying over the next 12 months. This is sometimes used by them to 'comp' you your status again.

Of course, the only sure fire way to re-qualify is to actually do the BIS SC's and tip over the re-qualification point.

Your QFF card spontaneously combusts and attempts to enter OW lounges are met with derisive laugher. Your self esteem, which you had tied to carelessly to your status, is shattered and you never enter an airport again.

I think the Terms and Conditions can confirm this. ;)

I just rang Qantas today to check when my extra status credits from my DSC offer were going to come through. Required these to maintain Plat and my year ends this month, also travelling early Aug. Told that I had been comped due to my loyalty and the card was on the way out.

It'll be accompanied with a letter that says it's a 'once off' though. If you have legitimately re-qualified with the double SC offer and they comp'd you prior to them hitting, then it's not a 'once off' and you're fine too btw ;)

Thanks for the information drewbles

SC's came thru yesterday bringing total up to 1290 for the year, rang qantas and they removed the 'comping' from my profile. Thanks again drewbles.
