Planning 3 nights Hilo, to explore Volcano Park and the night boat trip to view the lava flow from offshore. Then drive to Kona for two nights before a week on Oahu. Would appreciate any feed back for accommodation either Hilo or Kona, not worried about price will judge that ourselves. Thanks in anticipation.

Last year I stayed a few nights at the Marriott Waikaloa, here: https://www.marriott.com.au/hotels/travel/koamc-waikoloa-beach-marriott-resort-and-spa/

The resort was delightful - I was upgraded to an oceanfront bungalow, which was very comfortable. But if price is no object... Then you're probably better off at the four seasons, which is widely regarded as the best hotel on the island.

Would definitely recommend renting a car from the airport for maximum freedom getting around.

It's an incredible place. You kind of can't go wrong!

Should probably correct how I said that, didn't mean price is no object, just trying to get feedback then will do our own research on affordability. Unless my lottery tickets come home to roost :)

Was the issue with the security deposit with the owners or Homeaway?

The owners could only hit a button to return security deposit by payment method......home away wouldn't let them or me change the card number....in the end the owner took deposit.....and then bank transfered it to me less the fees they were charged

It's been years since we were on The Big Island and there are 2 places i've never forgotten. They are not 5 star but are rememorable for quirky reasons.

Volcano Places - Accommodations - Kate's Volcano Cottage.
Is located at Volcanoes and is close to the National Park. You can easily spend days there but if time is short, 2 nights at the cottage will allow for a full day in the park and also lava glow viewing at night. The charming cottage is located in the forest and feels like you are 'lost'.

Hawaii Hotels - Dolphin Bay Hotel, Hilo, Hawaii - Big Island Hotels
Is located in Hilo surrounded by forest and banana trees along walks behind motel. You need to sleep with earplugs here as it is invaided by noisy frogs. They realy are that loud and is quite novel. We had a poor sleep without earplugs but still left loving the experience!
