About to depart on the QF Sydney to Lax service in the A380. Got myself into 35K in the upper deck..however the flight is pretty empty.

Should I relocate my seat to an empty row in economy in the hope I'll get the whole row to myself or stick with the upper deck and emergency row leg room.?

I have had a lot of success with the empty row strategy but it is a gamble. If the flight is really empty, wait until checkin closes and then change seats at the lounge or gate, although by then others may have already snapped up the empty rows?

How empty is it? Once on a QF flight LHR- MEL we had maybe 10 people in the whole rear section of the plane so switching to an empty row once onboard was pretty easy.

About 150 empty seats is what I was told...

Decided not to take the gamble and stayed in the emergency row 35K, which is a great seat! The overhead bin space is virtually non existent though...

They allow you to change seats at the lounge or gate??
You can even change seats on board once flight has taken off.

I've been offered a chance by the CSM at having a row by myself down the back but I prefer sitting upright and bulkhead is as good a place as any in the cabin.

If I intend to sleep then 3 seats beats the exit seat. Ideal would be 3 seats on an A320 or 737 emergency exit where the armrests are not fixed and there is extra legroom. But they don’t often operate long haul sadly.

If I'm unable grab a row to myself (and there are other spare rows on the aircraft) I'm generally approached by the FA servicing my area and asked if I'd like to move to a row that I will have to myself.

Last few rides (SYD-HKG, SYD-LAX x2, each on the 388) I've accepted the offer and after take off have been escorted to the free row (which has been "blocked off" by the cabin crew with blankets on the headrests).

I had a couple of very nice FAs. One had a look see for me on the lower deck and the other one blocked off a row just as you described. Made my way down straight after take off.

So grateful as I managed to get a fair bit of shut eye. Only issue I had was with one of the arm rests which refused to stay up, so had to improvise with a blanket harness! I think that's the only issue with the seats in a row, the arm rests don't go all the way back.
