Hi everyone,

While I am not a FF, I have been lurking here and posting now and again for a number of years and find the advice I get very helpful. Here's my question.

My family of 4, two adults, a 14 year old and a 16 year old are flying into Milan and out of London in June/ July With Cathay. All good, booked with a TA as we had a couple of other things in in one port and out of the other was tricky and with Europe being a bit problematic we thought a TA was the best bet.

Three weeks ago the 16yo ruptures her ACL and is about to have surgery. She will hopefully be good to travel by then (11 weeks away) but will be on crutches.

In our original booking, the TA put in seat requests, the usual, either 4 of us together in the middle or two and two front and behind which is how we have travelled on the various trips we have made o/s before.

We asked her to see if she could get a bulkhead non-exit row set for the teen now as she will need to get up and move around more often and also stretch her leg becasue she will be on crutches and have a leg brace (potentially) -its a bit hard to tell this far out. We also have the travel-insurance-no-go option on the cards.

Of course, we realise that bulk heads are premium seats and often need to be paid for, however she did manage but it was not possible to get 4 of them which we totally get. As a result, while we are not spread out we are in various configurations within 4 rows of each other, in some cases, the 16 year old is on her own.

Now, some of you might say that at 16 she is fine to be on her own but she is the tentative type and even though a parent is mostly only a row away, I am still uncomfortable about a child with a leg injury being in the middle of a row of strangers and (given I have just read the thread about seat swapping LOL) there is no way someone will trade a bulkhead seat for a non bulk head so I can sit next to her - nor would I expect them to.

I am really grateful that our TA has managed to swing it so she has a bulkhead seat on each of the 4 connections and in some cases she has one or, even two of us with her but there is no flight where 4 of us are together or even two and two.

What are the chances of, on the day, the check in staff can juggle and arrange for us so we can at least get one parent and one child together on each leg. (The 14 year old, while a regular flier does need reminding about things like volume of headphones and placement of legs on seats etc!)

(One leg is good, 2 in centre bulkhead, 2 in side aisle, one leg reasonable, 3 in centre bulkhead, one across in window, one has 16 year old alone in middle bulkhead, one behind in middle on the aisle and two others on the side and last one had 16 year old alone in side aisle bulk head, two a row back in centre section and last another row back in side aisle.

No harm in asking. There's a reasonable chance pax with bulkhead seats are higher status and may get upgrades (though I'm not that familiar with Cathay to be honest). If you ask as early as possible you and daughter may be able to move / secure a couple of bulkhead seats. I would think a request for a parent to be near a 14 year old - non-bulkhead - would also be looked upon quite favourably by ground staff. The earlier you are there the better - always best if you can get unallocated seats rather than impose a move on someone who has pre-booked a seat or already checked-in.

It sounds like your TA has done a great job !!
I would agree with the approach outlined by kermatu. I think if it doesn't work out on the legs that she's alone she will be perfectly safe and comfortable with someone in the row behind.
Best wishes to her for the surgery and recovery.
