Hi,

I want to buy a bottle of absinthe from sydney duty free to Taipei. I'm transiting through Hong Kong. I don't believe Hong Kong sells absinthe.

Will it be possible to take it through security? I checked the Hong Kong airport website and it said it may be possible if it's from a respectable airport and it's in a tamper proof bag. Can anyone confirm this please?

I would be more comfortable purchasing it there and surprised you can't get it.

Anyone passing through the big noodle to assist one9?

I don't have an answer for the OP, but I know for a fact you won't be able to buy it in HK, since they don't let any liquids bought in the airport onto Aussie and US flights. It has to be in your checked luggage.

As a transit PAX you have no easy recourse. Transit security would confiscate it when heading from the arrivals levels to the departures levels.

There are carry-on searches at the gate HKG for USA and Oz flights, but this may have changed - at least for Qantas Flights.

The Qantas web site contradicts this:

Duty Free Purchases

Duty free purchases are allowed, however from 4 March 2008 new secondary screening restrictions apply.

Liquids, gels and aerosols purchased from duty free stores in Hong Kong airports, located after security screening points, will be allowed onboard, however, once purchased, they must be delivered to the gate by Duty Free store staff. The Duty Free goods can then be returned to the passenger once they have passed through the secondary screening point.

The goods must be in a transparent, sealed plastic bag. Receipts of the purchased duty free items must be attached or enclosed in the bag and must be clearly seen.

You cannot take any liquids in excess of 100ml into HKK airport when arriving as a transit passengers. You will be screened as you arrive before going up to the departure level.

It is my understanding that once you are in the HKG departures area you should be able to carry liquids purchased there into a flight to TPE. There is additional "manual" searching of carry-on bags for flights departing HKG for Australia and USA, but other flights to not get this same activity.

The OP's flight was HKG-TPE, not AUS/US which may well have different restrictions?

It would appear that it would be fine to carry liquids during transit at HKG airport if the previous airport has implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids or it is in a sealed, tamper-proof, plastic bag with receipt on the day of travel.

HKG Airport said:
Liquid purchases that are in excess of 100ml may be allowed through the security screening point at HKIA upon satisfactory checks if they meet the following requirements:

  • purchased from airports which have implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids (passengers are advised to check with their airlines on local requirements adopted at different countries) ; or
  • purchased on board Hong Kong registered aircraft (Cathay Pacific Airways, Hong Kong Dragon Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways and Hong Kong Airlines); or
  • purchased on board non-Hong Kong registered aircraft whose previous port of call is an airport which has implemented the new requirements on the control of liquids; and
  • liquid purchases are packed in a sealed plastic bag that is both tamper-evident and display satisfactory proof of purchase on the day(s) of the journey.

No one with any first hand experience?

With the rate that rules change at airports these days, I am still not entirely confident.

That should settle it then.

Just in case anyone has same question, Serfty, NM & sprucegoose were wrong. As JohnK posted duty free alcohol can be taken through HK as long as it the special sealed bag. When I took it through they saw it was in the sealed tamper proof bag and did not look at it.

Then things have certainly changed at HKG since I last transited.

Then things have certainly changed since my most recent HKG departure to Oz last year.

I dispute any of the three posters you mention were "wrong'; for myself I was simply posting of my experiences in response to zzyss's post along with an indication of the confused situation.

You are talking about different cases, as the OP was flying to TPE, where it is obviously okay to take DF alcohol, while you were flying to Oz, where this is not possible for whatever reason (as others have refered to, special liquid requirements for flight to AU and US).

So I assume nothing has changed, still not possible to take alcohol through HKG (or any other transit airport as far as I am aware) to Oz.

I believe you can purchase duty free alcohol while in-transit from SIN and bring to Australia.

I bought some in January and the lady asked me if PER was my final destination in Australia. I said no as I was travelling domestically to SYD. She did not quite understand that we do not have liquid rules on domestic flights. At least some sanity somewhere....

Yes, this is correct, you can buy in SIN and take into AU. BUT as with HKG or any other airport, you cannot take DF alcohol (or liquids in general?) THROUGH SIN on your way to AU, i.e. flying on QF6 departing FRA, you cannot stack up in FRA and take all the way to SYD as it would be confiscated in SIN.

The more you think about the whole procedure the more insane it appears...
