Howdy,

Starting a new job in the new year after quite some time working companies where most people wore jeans. Heading back to a suit & tie environment, so time for some serious clothes shopping!

I'll be in Singapore over Christmas, so wondering about having suits made vs buying new ones. I've never had a suit made, so wondering if anyone has any ideas/tips/advice?

Thanks!

RL

I don't have a specific taylor to recommend but usually just walking on Orchard road I get taylors guessing my measurements out loud or even running after me with a measuring tape. I got 2 suits made and delivered to my hotel in Singapore 5 years ago for a very competitive price.

I just had 2 suits made in Singas in October. Went to a place in China Town called Tony's Fashions. It was the first place on the right as you go into chinatown (Thanks Munitalp for the tip ;)) The guy claimed to own a number of tailors in china town, including Eurobest which gets a few recommendation. He certainly walked straight into eurobest on my second visit and tried to sell me some shirts. I'm not sure if they have some sort of deal or if he really owns it.

A$1200 for 2 suits with double pants. I probably could of got him down another little bit, but didn't bother. I'm pretty happy as they are a lot cooler than my previous suits. Wool, italian cashmere fabrics. Decent for work usage. Certainly my Hugo Boss suits is better, but that's not for work.

Can't state tailors in SIN, but get a tailored suit for sure.

I had one made for me in HKG a couple of years ago and I'm planning on going back there sometime next year to get another one made, as it's by far the best fitting and best looking suit I'd ever owned, plus it was not the most expensive suit I'd ever owned either as off the shelf here in CBR is often more expensive (as I'd imagine SYD would be as well) unless you want bargain basement, and often when I see guys in bargain basement my thoughts are "why bother".

Where are good (cheap) places to get HUGO? (without going too far off topic)

I'm not sure, as I got mine in Australia. I assume it was an average price for Australia. But it's my "wedding" suit.

Don't do it to yourself. Go to Harrolds or Henry Bucks and have a charcoal suit made by Brioni. The salary raise you get shortly after wearing this suit will pay for it.

Most big brands can't get cheaper than in the US of A. I get new work suits over there on an annual basis, usually for less than a third of what you'd pay at DJ or Myer.

I have about 12 Hugo Boss suits I think. One I bought in the Boss store in Miami South Beach, all the others were bought in Tony Barlow's Menswear in Perth.

Average price for a Boss 3 piece suit in AU is between $1700 - $3500.

They are mostly avail in 2 piece suits but some come with a waist coat to make it a 3 piece.

At $1700 - $3500 that would cover the cost of flying from here to SE Asia, finding a decent tailor, getting a really good suit made, and you'd probably even get a day or two to spare at what ever location you'd picked to see the sights. If you are willing to part with some points you'd even be able to do the trip in J for that price (that's what I am hoping for), plus do it as an ASA you'd even pick up some SC's, and even then you'd probably be left with some change...

That's pretty much the plan of my next suit purchase... :D

I can recommend Tony (the manager, not Tony Barlow) as well. Excellent service, and is always happy to see you!

I can agree with that. I believe TB also owns the Hugh Boss store on Hay Street and the franchise in David Jones!

I need to revise down my recommendation to they're OK. One pair of pants has some de-stitching issues.

I am so glad I can wear jeans to work ... And decent shorts when it's hot. The only time the good gear comes out for work is for important meetings with clients and sometimes interstate trips. I have one suit, made in Singapore in a place I can't remember on Orchard Rd and it cost me around AUS$500.

Probably shouldn't have bothered starting this post as it is little help to the OP, but I'm too far in to just cancel it.
