My friend has booked with QF and is flying on Emirates metal and has asked me if T-80 is still relevant. I have told him that I do not know ... Any help??

I have not seen T-80 being as relevant for international flights and seat selection, but TBH, that from a WP perspective.

My best suggestion is to check seating regularly leading up to the flight, from at least 10 days out.

Heck sometimes calling up and asking for a particular seat a month in advance can do the trick...
Called up around a month ahead of my flight to LAX on QF11 and asked if there was anything in row 33 about 3 times over a period of a week as EF indicated there was. Knocked back once because it appeared occupied/blocked to the CSA, knocked back once because the CSA identified it as blocked and a row reserved for WP and higher and on the third time managed to get three seats in row 33 for myself (SG) and my parents (both NB).

SG and PS see more available seats if the flight is lightly loaded. WP already has free access to everything at time of booking (except exit rows) generally.

Unless your WP1 then exit rows are free too. Though you have to ring and book it.

My friend is NB. Do you think that going to the Emirates website and entering manage my booking with the six digit PNR will give him access to seat selection??

Yes, and Emirates shows and allows selection of any available seat, so no T-80 to 'worry' about. Though if you do that the selected seat will disapear from view if viewed on Qantas.com for some reason but will be in the Emirates system.
