I'm heading to Europe at the end of the year and am looking for cheap J seats for the following:

SYD-MXP Around 20/11/14
LHR-SYD First week of Jan 2015

I am a VA Plat so flying with VA partners would be great but not essential.
I was looking at booking PE to AUH on VA metal then EY Y onto Europe and then upgrading with points both ways. This would come in at around $3K.

Can anyone offer any suggestions for J seats for around the same price or am I dreaming?

Thanks,
Josh

Hi,

How familiar are you with other frequent flyer programs eg Aadvantage from American Airlines?

They have a sale on at the moment whereby you can buy miles. To do a return journey you would need an account in your name and one in a friend/partners name. You must also have the account open for 14 days before can buy miles.

Currently you can get Cathay flights in business class for practically the dates you want - eg 19/11/14 going over.

To buy enough miles would cost you around $3000 total if my maths is correct but I'm in a rush to go out so have to check later. If interested then pop over to the Valentines Thread of the AA forum and ask about it.

AAdvantage miles will also let you fly on EY but it is a bit more expensive as have to do 2 awards. Probably looking around $3400 then.

Just might be better to get guaranteed J or does a points upgrade with Virgin process instantly? I don't know their program at all.

Thanks for the response Dale, I am a little apprehensive to buy miles and then by award seats incase the seats go before the miles are credited to the account then I'm stuck $3k out of pocket. I have looked into both AS and AA programs. VA confirm upgrades at time of booking so there is more certainty.
