Hi there ANZ FFers,

I'm hoping someone here in the Airpoints forum can assist me with this (mods please move if needed)

I'm a Velocity Platinum and will be flying SYD-ZQN on NZ830 (in Y) with my wife on 23rd July. Given the morning departure time, and as a wee treat we are considering staying over night at the Rydges at the airport in Sydney.

Given my status we can use the Air New Zealand lounge prior to our flight, so my question is - does anyone know what we would be able to expect in terms of food offerings at that time of the morning on a Sunday?? If it's reasonable then we'll just book a room only rate, otherwise I'll spring for Bed & Breakfast.

Thanks!!

The Air NZ breakfast spread is usually pretty good; scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, sausages, pastries and alcohol. I know MEL used to have a pancake machine but not sure about SYD.

Good spread at the lounge. When we were there the live cooking station was cooking eggs the way you like them.

Also trade your usual coffee for an espresso martini, the barman was stoked for having something else to do!

So, what are/were your thoughts on the NZ lounge at SYD?

Its nearly always jammed of late.

Good spread of breakfast is true. I love the chorizo.

Spread looked ok this morning , a few hot dishes and the usual pastries etc. They do good coffee too.

Pretty decent, we spent about an hour or so there - good coffee (love the iPad system), Lady Lenny took advantage of the egg station, decent breakfast choice and we had a nice quiet corner to sit in. I would have enjoyed a better view but what can you do?? It wasn't too busy, definitely filled up whilst we were there, but then again it was 9am on Sunday so I don't know what it would look like during the rush times, or when they have a full 777 to deal with plus the Star Alliance overflow.

Boarding however was an absolute nightmare!! Out of the lounge earlier than normal as the EFTPOS wasn't working at the newsagents and we like to have a magazine or 2 to flip through, so off into the scrum to do that, then push our way to the bus gates up by the Skyteam lounge, having to perch in a tiny corridor whilst a full Air India flight attempted to get down 1 set of escalators, then the ZQN flight is called and down we all go - scrum at the bottom of the escalator, quickly spot a priority lane, pull Lady Lenny out and beeline for it before anyone else notices they aren't enforcing it.

Bus to the aircraft was ok, flight was lovely, lounge was lovely, express path meant we got through security in about 5min (if that) but once again SYD falls to pieces when they try to board a flight.

I've never bothered but is the Singapore airlines lounge next door any good or worth a look? Same with the Etihad one near McDonalds, its always been closed when I walk past.

No idea about Etihad, but I've been to the Singapore Airlines lounge a couple of times. I quite like it, but then again I am a fan of SQ and their product in general. It's a bit small and can get crowded with there's an A380 in, there's a decent food spread, usually a couple of nice Singaporean/SE Asian dishes, it's a coffee machine though so that might put people off. But I find it quite pleasant, it has enough food to not worry about eating in the terminal or on the flight if all you want to do it sleep, reasonable beverage selection that's free pour, and when I've been there staff have wandered around and refilled glasses/offered canapes/spring rolls etc. a couple of times.

Great to hear! The barista-made coffee is also excellent in the domestic AirNZ lounges - WLG is probably my favourite.

Yup.

Like Lenny, I've never been into the Etihad lounge. I prefer the NZ lounge to the SQ one - specifically, the outlook, natural light and space (and the coffee).
