Awesome!

Hopefully VIC & QLD will sort out their issues with Uber sooner than later to allow airport pick up as well.

I've never had a problem being picked up with an Uber at BNE?

hopefully they can avoid the chaos of the public area (where I have often ordered uberx's in the past without issue :)) - you feel sorry for the poor drivers sitting in the queue for ages with the meter off

I've done the same but you have to select a random location outside of the airport and the driver can take a while to get into the car park and it can get really busy in there.

Great news, have a flight into Sydney on Friday, look forward to trying it out.

Hoping Canberra will follow suit. As an UberX driver I could get a lot of work from the airport, but currently the difficulties of negotiating a pickup without getting pinged by the cops keeps me away.

Having a good look at where parking arrangements are for drivers I can see that Macca's, Krispy Kreme and KFC carpark full of Uber drivers. They all frown about people using this carpark as a jumping off point to pick up people. (unless of course they buy something) In the ABT article it talks about a dedicated pickup zone between T2/T3. Not sure exactly where that will be but as far as I know don't the taxis currently use some of that area? I guess time will tell. (I'm picturing a Monty Python sketch, with the taxis and uber drivers having a water fight) :)

As for the T1 waiting zone for drivers I am not fully familiar with that area however I had a look on google maps and the areal shot must have been taken on a business day as I could not see a lot of street parking. I could be wrong.

It's official.... UberX is open for business at Sydney Domestic and International airport.

However I have already contacted Uber with a few issues so hopefully they will respond to me in the next 12 hours. Firstly their domestic map is slightly wrong and there is no mention of pickup at Qantas T3. I can see some confusion if they try and funnel all the QF pax to the Public pick up area.

Here's the map as provided by SYD: ride-sharing is supposed to go to the centrally-located Priority Pick-up Zone, although no reason they can't meet you at the free but further-away Express Pick-up Zone.

used this for the first time last Sunday - driver was waiting outside in alexandria about 10mins away so booked after picking up bags off the belt in T3 then walked across to the green carpark and met him pretty much on time.

they have sorted out the traffic issues there and are stopping people from blocking the entrance to pick up passengers so traffic flows well.

driver mentioned that next time we should meet him in the yellow carpark to avoid the $4 airport charge...

I've heard people have been using side streets like fifth and ninth to get picked up, almost no traffic on those streets and not too much further to walk.

I was under the impression that the charged is automatically charged to the passenger when you arrange for a pick up at the Airport. If the driver talks you into picking up at the free zone, the driver has saved $4 but you still get charged for it.

Just got picked up at the green zone. Booked it as I walked outside from baggage collection and by the time I got to the pick up he was there. 3.30pm in the afternoon and a trip from domestic to the Intercontinental hotel cost a total of $38.10. The charge for the ED was $6.81 and the Syd airport access fe was $4.00 and the Uber guy was $27.29. New vehicle, clean and smelt nice, driver spoke my language. Drove me directly to the hotel with no 3 way conversation.....no way will I get into a stinking, dangerously maintained, vehicle with a driver from the back streets of Mumbai constantly talking his private language into a hand held phone again.

Let Uber pick up from the ranks at the terminal and put "those other" vehicles into the other pick-up zone

Flame suit on, glass of merlot in hand, popcorn ready...bring it on

Just curious. Does anyone know how much HC/VHA's pay the airport per year in Mel and Syd? I'm assuming unlike taxi's, they pay a flat rate every year?

Only if they start the trip inside the airport I guess - even with the $4 fee it was still a big saving over a cab

It's $50 for a landslide vehicle permit (per vehicle) and $150 for a new driver authority. Pretty sure driver authority renewal is $125 each year after that but vehicle permit remains $50.

In MEL btw

That is possible however it means pax have to walk further.

I had a pax ask me to go to Ninth Street and I declined. I picked him up at the Priority carpark and there were no issues.

It is only charged once the driver leaves the Priority carpark. The e-tag opens up the boom gate and once again on leaving. If the driver stays in the carpark longer than the 15 minutes then they will be charged more. That is why I always now ring to make sure they are there. The last thing I want to do is go around again wasting time, fuel, money etc... Margins are thin as they are. The parking charge is treated like a toll and appears on our info as a toll charge.
