Arvo all,

Many of us will be familiar with the cluster hump that has become doing a passenger pick up at SYD.

Simple question - is there anything stopping a passenger from helping himself to a post-flight coffee/beer in the DJ lounge than striding out into the 'drop off' area and getting a pick up from family/friend from that location instead of going through the nonsense of downstairs??

Sorry if this has been dealt with elsewhere - I have tried searching this topic (even trying to work out why they closed the kerbside pick up downstairs in the first place - more taxi area I'm guessing??) but haven't found anything that addresses this specifically.

Many thanks and safe flying,

Yes, plenty. I'm sure you can be fined, and regardless of whether you get a ticket straight away or not, surveillance cameras are used to give out fines by mail.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

There is actually a pick up area further down the road that requires entry via a ticket and boom gate. First 15 minutes are free.

I'm pretty sure they send fines to people who pick up in the drop off zone. Or that could be the international terminal.

Nothing tho. to stop you popping into the DJ lounge at Syd on arrival for a quick drink. If you don't have any luggage to pick up, can you depart the lounge via the "premium entry"?:oops::mrgreen: Never been game to do it myself...it is only down the escalator, turn L) and L) and you are out the normal way;)

There is an escape hatch for the premium entry. Apparently it is mostly used by people after a "breath" of fresh air.

That's handy to know - not because I'll be needing fresh air, but rather because I'll probably arrive at the airport before my wife this evening and she'll be most annoyed if I ask her to go through the regular terminal security before I can guest her in (esp. given I'm Gold because of family pooling!).

Back on topic, I have seen reports on random internet forums (sorry, no links immediately at hand) from those who have received fines in the post for doing an upstairs pickup at SYD - from memory it was claimed that evidence of the offence was obtained from security cameras.

Presumably they pick out a day a month or something, view the tapes and fine a few people just to 'keep the fear.'

Seems a bit rich given the broad expanse of free kerb upstairs but, of course, that free kerb would disappear under a chaotic mess of cars if it was widely used for pickup. I was very cynical of the ticketed free pickup area when introduced but I must admit it's worked surprisingly well for me, both as pax or driver.
