Sydney airport hotels: best value?

G'day all!
I did do a search... and was rather surprised when this term did not come up.. I am flying to the US (one way! Relocation for a new job!) on QF11 at 1305 on the 24th of May.

Not really keen to battle traffic from the Northern beaches where I am staying with family to make a ~9am check in to enjoy the J-Lounge so I am thinking of shelling out for a hotel for sunday night for the family (Wife + 5yo) + me for the night.. not after the cheapest but highly value... well... value! Wotif has a special on the holiday inn at 159... any suggestions???

The HI at the Airport is not too bad at all; does depend on what you want; the HI at the airport is a pleasant hotel but not that much around but does have a shuttle service to the airport

I know you've asked about SYD airport hotels, but have thought about staying in town? If you have to wait for scheduled shuttle times can take longer than just catching a taxi or train from the CBD. Even by taxi it probably adds only 10-15mins, especially if you stay towards Central end of the CBD.

I used to stay at the HI a lot but had some very bad experiences in the last few times with poor service, guests being checked into my room while I was still there etc. I suspect the first mystery hotel is also the HI, there are only two 4.5 star properties and only one does not have the pool!

I would probably go for the Stamford Plaza as its cheaper to be frank.

The Stamford has nice big windows overlooking the takeoff runway and is easy walking distance to domestic if you want something to do. Serviced by Sydney Shuttles ($6?).

We find the HI very good and you don't have to wait for the shuttle, there always seems to be Taxis waiting outside. If not they will call one and it is cheaper than the shuttle if you have more than one.

The HI has been one of the "secret" hotels a number of times on Wotif (the one where they tell you the location, rating, amenities but not the actual hotel until your purchase). I know I have had at least $70 saving off the actual Wotif rate and the secret hotel rate for the same night. I'm not sure if this is available on the night you are planning on going but if it is, its a good deal.

I've used the stamford a number of times. It's generally good and pretty cheap.
I second the suggestion to stay in the city though, can get a cab pretty quickly and cheaply - especially since it will be so early!

Thanks for all the advice! Still undecided... May end up just paying for the early morning taxi and enjoy the QF J lounge (currently staying with family but some issues there.. you know how the saying goes!)

Very interesting doing a "true" one way trip! and a little scary! Makes it much better being OW Sapphire! (mainly due to advice from this forum!)

We have used the Ibis.Nothing flash but clean,comfortable and reasonably quiet.usually one of the cheapest.Staying there again on the 27th.
