First of all I would like to say I really enjoy reading through these forums, I've learned so much about making my travel experience better. Kudos to all of you who put time and effort into contributing your thoughts and experience for the lesser knowledgeable of us!

Next year is a rather large milestone for me birthday wise and I am wanting to spend it in my favourite country (Spain). I am thinking due to the milestone birthday and all that I will save up and treat myself to a J ticket. Now not to be picky but I have some criteria when it comes to booking so I thought I would get some feedback from you on which of the options due to criteria are my best bet. Criteria:
  • No OW airlines if possible, I don't accrue QF points very much anymore as all my travel here in OZ is on DJ. So for points and status I would prefer to fly either a *A airline or one of the DJ affiliates. I will take *A as I also accrue Aeroplan points on my trips home to Canada on AC and am saving up.
  • I am not fussed on traveling via Asia or America and am happy to have a few stops along the way if need be.
  • If I am going to be paying in the 6-7K range for this flight, I would prefer to have lie flat or almost lie flat beds. I had a look at Thai due to *A but looks like their J product is a wee bit inferior to some of the others.
  • I would like to enter Spain either in MAD or BCN, but would also consider LHR/LGW with a separate ticket on EasyJet or one of the others if considerably cheaper.
  • I would like to leave SYD ideally on 1 August but would consider any day that week, and return on 20th or 21st August.
Your input on best value for money given my criteria is much appreciated.

Cheers!

Simple. Sq Syd-Sin-Bcn on A380 and 777-300ER flat J beds

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I would wait to see if US Dividend Miles have another 100% miles bonus, and buy the miles and redeem for SYD-BKK-MAD on TG F. Time is on your side at the moment.

Have you got any miles to burn either in DJ's Velocity or QF Freq Flyer? If so you could maybe do an award ticket SYD/Asia/SYD then buy a J fare ex Asia to Spain & return. If you have no points available, still compare the costs of separate tickets SYD/Asia/SYD then another fare in J fare ex Asia. This can sometimes be cheaper than one through airfare Australia/Europe return particularly in J.

Otherwise checkout the airfares on VA SYD/LAX/SYD then a separate J fare ex LAX to MAD or BCN return.

$7649 for SYD-AUH-BRU-MAD return with EY (BRU-MAD-BRU codeshare with SN). Admittedly not the best set of flights, but cheaper than SQ (and would be cheaper again if you waited for a sale)

And just to add to the US DM idea, even without any promotion and buying the points at full cost. Sydney to Europe return can be done under $6,000 in F class. [Calculations are 150,000 x $0.035 x 1.075 = US$5,643.75. Add taxes and booking fees say ~$300 and you will squeeze it under $6K in First return]

This is actually a very very good idea. I have looked at the DM promos in the past and often thought they would be good to get home to Canada on AC as well!

Has anyone done TG F class? Worth the effort? It's around the same price as J class on SQ.
