Why is SYD-BNE now a shorter flight than SYD-MEL? Its a longer distance yet for both QF and VA the timetable has SYD-MEL at 1hr 35mins and SYD-BNE at only 1hr 30mins. Is the time spent taxiing at Tullamarine soooo much longer than in Brisbane? When I was a youngster flying in the 727s SYD-MEL was scheduled at 1hr 5mins. it later became 1hr 15mins, then 1hr 20mins, then 1hr 30mins and now 1hr 35mins. Is someone secretly moving Melbourne closer to tassie?

Can't be that. HBA-MEL duration has lengthened as well :)

Earth expansion (geological in-joke).

On airport congestion before and after is one the reasons. Sydney newest runway is long taxi to the take off point.
Wheels up to wheels down not a lot different. But have also read they fly slower now than a decade ago to save fuel. 727's were fast (& noisy)

Sydneys newest runway is used for Northen bound ops, which adds to the confusion, not solves it, and AFAIK M.8 is still the cruise speed used by most.

Sydneys newest runway commenced service in 1994.

Many times I have departed to the north on it when bound for MEL.

Such is generally followed by an immediate right turn before throttling down while passing over the eastern coast suburbs then firing up before another right turn and heading south over the Illawarra.

Thats the case for contr ops in light winds, however the prevailing use is for north bound racetrack patterns, while 16R is used for heavy ops and southbound racetrack patterns. I personally have never had a BNE departure go off 16R, strangely enough I have had a few  when I was commuting for a few years.

FWIW I suspect the times are based on historical results and the runways are irrelevant, more likely the new ATS system with ground holds coming into play.

Note that BNE-SYD is scheduled at 1h 35m on QF flights.

I suspect that many airlines now lengthen out their flight times in order to improve their on-time performance.

Don't you hate those 16L landings ... :-|

Does SYD-MEL being a slight westerly direction lengthen the flying time. I know the opposite MEL- SYD flying time is usually only 60 mins sometimes as low as 55min.

The 767 would be M0.80 but the 737-800/A320 is about 0.76-.078 and the 737-400 is 0.74 AFAIK

I believe the 727 possibly got up to 0.84 but happy to be told differently.

Similar reason as to why Paris to London is 1:45 but the flying time is only :50. The airlines have extended the times to account for congestion delays.
