SYD-LHR Return on a VA Ticket

Starting to look at booking a return business class ticket from SYD-LHR on a VA ticket. My options are either EY in both directions or SQ in both directions.

Does anyone know if it's possible to book EY in one direction and SQ in the other on a single ticket, not two one-way tickets? Is this something that only a travel agent can organize?

Just change it from Return to One way then you can book EY one way then SQ another. It can be done without a travel agent online.

Depends on the scheme being booked.

AA, QF and VA for excample all have one way awards (in fact a return booking is really two or more one way awards under the same PNR).

UA on the other hand have retarn awards rather than one-way (a one-way is charged as a return).

That is different - you may need a TA ...

With the VA fares, you must route outbound the same way you route inbound. So if you go out via AUH, then you must come back via AUH and similarly if you go out via SIN, you must come back that way too. So the only way to do what you're looking at is to go with two one way fares, which you correctly identify, will be more expensive than a return.

So it looks like I will need to purchase a ticket with VA for one of the two operating airlines for travel in both directions. Having flown EY on the route a number of times, I'm now leaning towards SQ as I would like the opportunity to experience their new business class on their A380 although I think the VA fares on SQ are somewhat higher than they are for EY.

With SQ/VA the VA codeshares are generally more expensive than using the SQ flight numbers, so watch that.

I now notice that VA will sell a ticket SYD-LHR via LAX with the LAX-JFK sector on VS. However for a redemption ticket, the only options being offered are via SIN or AUH.

I'm surprised there isn't an option for SYD-LHR via HK with the HKG-LHR sector on VS either as a revenue or reward ticket.
