I almost feel like asking QF if I can have what they are smoking...

Just received an email from QF about their USA sale, $999 return for SYD-LAX / SFO / DFW, seems like a very good deal.

Change the departure city to CBR and that price goes up to $1,870 = SFO, $2,020 = DFW, $2,070 = LAX.

QF, you’re honestly telling me that it costs the more to fly from CBR-SYD (one of the world’s shortest flights) than it does to fly from SYD-DFW (one of the world’s longest flights)?

(Yes I realise I am complaining about the murky world of airline fares)

Not sure if they will interline QF to QF (BA won't even interline BA to BA) after Sep 1 but assume they won't so buy the cheapest fare from CBR to SYD, or buy from a Travel agent and save QF from earning some additional revenue

I did some dummy bookings and the price went down to $243 return to tack on the CBR-SYD (or alt international port) flights.
It looks more like the person whom was loading in the airfares into their "Flight Deals" page didn't exactly care about correct information for anywhere other than Sydney.

Most likely fare buckets.

In any case I've just sent a msg to the mrs to see if she is interested in a trip to the USA next year, although typically if there is 2 or more of us we tend to drive to SYD, because even at $243 pp for the CBR-SYD segment get a couple of people along and it becomes stupidly expensive compared to simply driving. (At $243 for a single person, it is still in the realms of reasonable once you have accounted for fuel / tolls / parking to drive CBR-SYD).

As suggested you have been booked into a higher fare bucket, due to CBR-SYD being in a high fare bucket. Also welcome to the new world of single PNR multiple sector flights.

I have noticed this kind of pricing before, so I always check the ex Syd price and compare to ex Canberra. Generally I pay for the international bit and do an award flight to/from Canberra if the price difference looks excessive. We almost always overnight at the airport in Sydney flying out, so I haven't had to worry about issues with connections.

And i catch the murrays bus to Syd then get on from there. So much cheaper

Being CBR based, with limited exception all my international flights are multi-sector single PNR flights, so I'm quite used to how low or high the "extra" is for the positioning flights.

This thread is more that I found it highly amusing that QF was advertising a sale, and then tacked on the short positioning flight at more than double the cost of the long haul segment, and yet still tried to call it a "special deal".

The day that airlines have an all-encompassing, logical fare structure, we FF fanatics will lose ALL our fun of finding quirks that benefit us.

It wouldn't matter even if they have 2 QF pnrs for CBRx/SYD & SYD/DFW as you can still through check on QF to QF flights.

I recall a while back flying AKL-SYD and SYD-CBR on separate tickets. The AKL-SYD leg was booked on sale with QF for $136 (the outbound leg was $179) and the SYD-CBR flight was $149.

And I thought that was bad...

This week I wanted a reward CBR - JFK return which I have found sometimes I need to call up before the end of that same day to add CBR SYD CBR. It took hours on hold and having a long 'discussion' to add those first and last sectors. It could not be done on line and now they say they can't do it either. Catch 22. After 2 hours they finally 'found a way to do it'.

What has changed to make this so difficult? Will it be the same for all dom connections?

Looks like QF knows where the biggest travel account spenders live.
