My son wants to go Silver on a Uni study trip to Brasilia late Jan 2019 return late Feb 2019. Tight budget. Even the Qantas multi sectors via SYD ALK Santiago seem low SCs or am I expecting too much. They are between $20 -$26 per SC?

Any assistance would be helpful - even tips, happy to do the searching

I think you mean AKL (Auckland)

IMHO Chasing Silver is not really a worthwhile goal. That probably seems elitist or something, and I do not mean it that way, but when you're seeing SC values like tht, and the total required vs the benefit of Silver? Your son would probably be better off going the cheapest route (which may well be Lataam anyway, which would earn some SC, but one would also need to be mindful of the QF 4 sector requirement a.k.a ~).

While Silver gives a lounge pass and modest points bonus it doesn't provide a lot of benefit, specially if someone's future plans may not see a lot of travel.

Save the bucks, get the BFOD and spend the $$ on the time in Brazil IMHO.

Thanks Richard -Yes I did mean AKL

I will check his future travel and see if he thinks its worth going for Gold - his status resets in April 2019

I would book a cheap QF return ticket for SYD-SCL, then book a separate LATAM fare from SCL to BSB (presumably via GRU). This will probably work out cheaper overall. When I did this, the LA flights ex SCL all booked into flex Y which maximised the SCs, and I was able to add quite a few flights onto a single booking. Also wasn't too expensive as I paid in Chilean pesos. But beware the Chile reciprocity fee if entering the country (even just to collect luggage and check in to another flight).

Thanks Mattg (and Boca68)
That is an option we hadnt thought of - will investigate
cheers
