Scoot has just announced new flights from Singapore to Athens.

Fares from SYD to ATH are $419 one-way in economy and $1,199 one-way in business. Return is double the price. Obviously baggage etc. is not included with the economy fare.

Travel from 20 June 2017. Good fares are probably available from other cities too - I only checked Sydney.

They aren't that good once you add in stuff.
A$94 for 20kg checked luggage. A$94 for an extra carry on bag. A$50 for meals between SIN - ATH

I did a quick search for October next year for a potential trip to Paris - $840 (good price) + $188 for luggage or $320 for luggage and meal. Surely a more up market airline can be had for about $1200 return?

But I guess not in "business" (really PE) for $2,400++. Fairly attractive at that, I think, considering the high costs of flying out of Australia.

I found the marketing interesting. "We're popping our European cherry" and, when you open the link, the sign up for the newsletter is "Are you getting it daily". Seems odd for a Singaporean carrier.

I guess the $1,200 one-way fare for "business" (which I agree is basically just premium economy) could be attractive if you needed a one-way fare to Europe and didn't have points to burn. A one-way ticket might cost that much just for economy on most other airlines.

I'm intrigued as to why they chose ATH as their European destination. It's a nice enough place, but not exactly convenient if you want to go elsewhere in Europe. Perhaps it's as far as their 787's could fly?

I would have thought their 787-9s would be capable of flying further than ATH.

Perhaps it's to avoid cannibalism of some of SQ's western European routes? It's also one of the only major European destinations not already served by a direct flight from SIN.

ATH is a former SQ destination that was dropped, basically due to lack of high yield traffic (remembering SQ is 100% owned by SQ). Greece, and in particular the Greek Islands, are quite a popular destination for Singaporeans (as well as, of course for travellers in Australia and elsewhere in SE Asia).

After dropping the year round service to ATH around the end of 2012, during 2014 and 2015, , SQ ran a (northern) summer only service to ATH, but didn't run that this year, instead serving ATH via IST with codeshare on TK. I actually wouldn't be surprised if the Scoot service turns out to be seasonal as well, running only to October.
