I'm hoping someone with much more knowledge about these things than me can help with this.

I have bought my kids and grandkids Swiss ticketed flights to South Africa from Brisbane on QF, South Africa to London via Zurich on LX , Geneva to Frankfurt on LH, Frankfurt to Singapore on LH, and Singapore to Brisbane on SQ.

They all have QF and Virgin Australia membership. I am thinking that neither of these is going to be any good for this trip. What airline should they join? They all live in Australia.

Thanks very much for any suggestions if any for this itinerary. Tickets are all in Economy and for July 2016. This trip is a family safari to celebrate my significant birthday and then the kids and grandkids are all off to Europe afterwards to have fun whilst we meet up with friends to have another safari.

SQ would be the obvious one for all bar the first flight. They can either leave them in KrisFlyer or transfer them to Virgin Velocity.
However, I would consider crediting the last flight to Velocity after arranging family pooling if it has an SQ (rather than LX) prefix. The combined status credits would get someone well on the way to the next tier

My apologies if I'm just stating the obvious, but you should be able to credit the first leg to South Africa to Qantas if flying QF.

Thanks, they plan to do that if possible as it is a QF flight. I've told them all to join SQ, then transfer to Velocity plus family pool.
