Hi

We are travelling to Mauritius in Feb and would like a hotel with beautiful beach on a lagoon if possible. 4-5 star. Not sure whether the East Coast or the West Coast is best. Anyone been there and have suggestions?

Hi Maureen,

you will absolutely love Mauritius. I lived there for 18yrs and I really miss the nice beaches, weather and local culture. All hotels on the coasts are nice but there 2 that are my favourites because they are away from the main tourist hub which is mostly the north of the island:

1. Le Paradis Hotel which is located on the south west coast of the island, it's part of the Beachcomber chain. It is absolutely beautiful and has all the facilities that you want such as restaurants, water sports etc. You can check out their website at
PARADIS HOTEL & GOLF CLUB - Mauritius - A Beachcomber Hotel

2.
The Belle Mare Plage Hotel which is located on the East coast of the island. It can get a little bit windy there but the hotel is just spectacular and I absolutely love it. Luxury Hotels Mauritius, Five Star Resorts Mauritius

All the hotels will offer you half-board which includes a huge buffet breakfast and dinner, so you usually only have to spend money on drinks and lunch.

Just be careful though if you are going in February, it is summer and hot but it's also peak Cyclone season and if you are unlucky, you may get stuck at the hotel with bad weather. I usually tell all my friends that the best time to go is around end of March.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

Thanks for that i'll check out those 2 hotels. Id love to go around April but my husband has to go in Feb due to work commitments. We are stopping for a few nights in Reunion on the way over and wondering if the Seychelles are close enough to have a couple of days there as well.

That sounds like a nice trip! :)

Reunion Island is close, only about 1hr plane ride from Mauritius, I've been there a few times. They have similar weather as Mauritius and you will love it there if you like to go hiking. Their beaches are not as nice for swimming but great surfing. One of their main attraction is their live volcano called Piton de la Fournaise, you have to hike about 5-6hrs to get there but if you have a whole day to spare, it is definitely worth it especially when it's in eruption.

As for Seychelles, they are further away and very similar to Mauritius but more expensive. If you are going to Mauritius I wouldn't recommend going to Seychelles and vice versa because they are both very similar in terms of beaches, hotels etc.

I can add positive feedback for the Belle Mare Plage based on 17 nights there in 2007, especially if you're a golfer. Two 18 hole courses are available.

They tell you no green fees but you have to hire a cart or take a caddy so they get you for $$ that way (not huge amounts).

Please PM me if you have any questions on the resort.

The TA that booked it (who is a personal friend despite being an Essendon supporter :D) suggested that you do hand out some tips at the end of your stay directly to the staff. Firstly as it is a relatively poor country and secondly it's better than doing it via the hotel's accounts staff.
