We had JQ flights CNS/KIX/CNS booked as Qantas awards and EK flights KIX/HAM/KIX booked directly on Emirates website.
The outbound JQ flight was delayed 2 hours so I mentioned at check-in that we therefore had only two hours to collect baggage, process in and out of Japan and get back to the EK boarding gate; would this be enough time [I had already checked in and had got boarding passes for the EK flight]. The counter supervisor asked for the boarding pass and after a short wait handed us baggage slips showing the bags checked through to HAM via KIX and DBX.
Off the JQ flight we walked through the transit check and into the EK gate. The staff called us forward to check we were real and the bags belonged to us and we would be on the flight but it was no problem. At HAM there were our bags.
Checking in at HAM for the return flight we hadn't checked in to the JQ flight on the web as I had an Emergency Row seat but I thought I'd ask. The HAM EK counter staff thought about it for a minute and a few keystrokes later gave me baggage slips showing DBX/KIX/CNS. Because I didn't have a boarding pass for the JQ flight and wasn't sure if the gate or anyone airside could actually check me in we cleared into Japan at KIX with our cabin bags and checked in at the JQ counter with no bags to check in [I told the counter staff they had been checked through and she did not have any comment] Again at the gate the staff asked to see the baggage slips and OK'ed everything. Bags arrived in CNS with us.
Pretty happy with the result.
Question though; Could I have 'checked-in' airside in KIX? That would have been nice. Watching people try to use the fingerprint scanners gets old real fast and JQ checkin at KIX was a bit slow.
