I am wondering which airlines are expected to join these groups over the next 12 months. I would like to see Star Alliance grow to offer more choice of routing ex Australia, provided there is time to make most of US dividend miles. At the moment I am limited to SQ, UA, NZ, AC and TG, with the latter providing most availability whenever I have checked for award seats. I have not looked at South Africa Airways. Are there others out there?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Turkish Airways (Star Alliance) were reported earlier this year to be coming to Australia in 2014 - and to have Australia - Istanbul direct once they get a plane capable. But the choice ex Australia of the ones you list is already is pretty good! Two Asian carriers (onto Europe), 2 Nth America and the Kiwis!

For OneWorld, Qatar Airlines is joining 2014.

Outside Australia, TAM of Brazil changing from Star Alliance to One World in 2014 and of course US Air in the process of similarly changing, courtesy of the AA takeover (subject to approval still, I think).

The wikipedia pages of each alliance usually have a good list of current, previous, and future members. After several years of rapid growth in *A I think its currently OW who is expanding rapidly - they seem to have a new member every six months. I personally think *A has far too many members now as there are a lot of duds - more carriers doesn't necessarily mean better. I doubt the ability for Australians to book cheap J and F flights through USDM is a deciding factor on the make-up of *A though.

As for SkyTeam, no-one cares about them so I don't know who's coming or going.

Three you are missing are CA(Air China), BR (Eva Air) out of BNE, albeit on a very limited schedules, and as Fantic125 pointed out OZ (Asiana) out of SYD. USDM also has QR as a partner.
