St George Amplify Signature Visa - 60,000 Qantas Points

This credit card offer was touted on the PointHacks website and email list today.

The St George Amplify Signature Visa - 60,000 Qantas Points is a blatant example of bait marketing.

Following receipt of the PointHacks email I called St George to apply. A wonderfully polite operator took all the details and reported that the computer accepted the application and that it was off to the loans department.

The operator came back to advise me that my application for this card had been declined because my income level was not high enough (but it was high enough to get past the computer!) - but - that, surprise, surprise - I could have anyone of three other St George marketed credit cards that didn't have the QF FF points bonus.

When queried as to what income I needed the response was "I don't know - they don't tell me that"!

Just for the record I am prepared to divulge my finances -

Income $110k
Savings $500k+
Own home.
Own motor car.
No other debt.

And I don't qualify for the St George Amplify Signature Visa - 60,000 Qantas Points but I can have any one of three other cards (without the FF points).

Bait marketing.

Bull****, you're just got a rogue agent who did not know what he was talking about. From memory (I might be wrong) the minimum income required was something like $65k a year
Why didn't you apply online?

You could be right.

I called to query whether we could get the card in a state with no St George presence (answer - yes) and the operator invited me to let them do it ... the rest is history now.

The real annoyance was that I didn't qualify for the card with the points but I could have virtually any other card!

But you have now given me the impetus to do an online application - although I'm probably marked now!

Maybe they don't want to pay the 60,000 in points plus the $$$ commission that Point Hacks gain per click thru.

Personally unless there is something in it for me, I just go direct.

I just double checked, the income requirement is a minimum of $75k so you more than satisfy it.
you should reapply online and if rejected get them to explain why

I got mine last month, no problems with application but there were problems with delivery of the actual card. Instructions they send in an email say "wait for the welcome package to arrive" and mine never did so I rang StGeorge to only be told to go to a branch to identify myself first and then they will send the package. So I did that, still no card, so I had to ring again - apparently whoever in the branch was supposed to press the button and order the card didn't do it so it was only ordered then...4 weeks to get the package and card in the mail, my personal record

Got mine pretty painlessly with a lower income. Went to a branch for an I.D. check, sent in the disclosure form that came with the initial mail, card arrived and activated. Applied direct online. I couldn't find the income requirement mentioned when I applied.

What's the annual fee? I couldn't see it in amongst all the 'benefits.
Amplify Signature Card - St.George

I did find this in my search (regarding the bonus points):
In order to be eligible customers must have been charged the standard annual fee.

Ah stupid me - it was on another tab - $279 a year with no additional cardholder fee. Too much I think.

$279 for 60koints too much, you must really not value QF points!

No I was looking at it in isolation. I guess I should look at it as a smash and grab for the points and ditch it after a year like everyone else does. I'm too damn lazy to be bothered chasing different credit cards and points all the time - too much to do these days. I reckon it's costing me more than it's worth half the time.

Citibank made a near identical offer in November 2014, so I grabbed one. It too was a Signature card with 60,000 QFF or Citi rewards attached.

The rub was that eventually I had to get the ACCC onto them to force them to cough up the 60,000 QFF points. Citi made every excuse imaginable, and microscoped every word of the T&Cs to wriggle out of the points obligation. Luckily I took a screen-shot of the offer and footnotes at the time of accepting the offer.

In the end I got the points (and a waiver of the first year annual fee, $299) , but it was a nightmare...and I'm an existing Citibank customer.

The saga ends ... so long as the points gets credited (in the stated 30-60 days)!

I followed sergeyvzn's advice and did an online application - with the predicted result of rejection.

That was followed up with an internal complaint to St George that resulted - after numerous communications and follow ups - in the card being issued yesterday. The excuse ran along the lines of the clerk got confused and the initial rejection was in error and resulted in the subsequent online rejection.

As opposed to the initial agent (and she was nice and apparently helpful - just wrong) the complaints office and staff at the branch that I picked the card up from were superb. The branch staff checked that my FF account was joined to the card account and walked me through activation. They (two of them) then made certain that I understood the purchase requirement to get the points and then one of them walked me to a retail store where I used the card.

So, after a month to the day I now have the card, have completed the purchase conditions for the points and have three personal credit reports (that I got just in case there was something there that resulted in the rejection - there wasn't!).

Thanks to the members for their success stories (and tacit encouragement) here.

Que sera - all over red rover ...
