hi guys,
thought i ask everyone what they thought of my options to get from ADL to SFO in May next year in J

don't mind paying 1 J ticket but want to be able to redeem points for the other - so award availability is a main consideration - no status with any carrier so no benefits from status available

time not a huge concern, happy to go the longer way with SQ than with VA or QF

my current thought is to go with SQ, there's award availability for the dates i need in J for 1 but going the long way via HKG rather than the direct SIN-SFO flight, but i'll definitely waitlist for the direct flight. price for the paid ticket is slightly cheaper than VA, but the total duration is considerably longer. the other benefit is i won't have to do a domestic ADL-SYD/BNE to connect onwards to LAX and have another domestic connection LAX-SFO. SQ a330 SIN-ADL i've flown often enough to put up with the redeye on the way back.

very keen to try VA's new business on a long flight, but not optimistic about award availability opening up for the exact dates i need... also not keen to pay another $10k for the 2nd ticket

for the same reasons as VA a QF option would probably not be entirely viable either without status to request the award seat i need

CX allows companion awards but i'm not sure how successful that usually is? anyone has experience? i'll have to pay 50k AM for ADL-HKG and another 75k for HKG-SFO which isnt too bad.

does anyone else have any comments or other suggestions worth exploring?

thanks!
