Hi guys,

Currently VA Plat, not doing much flying this year but I'm planning a trip from Melbourne-Japan later this year which may earn enough SC to help me retain Plat for another year.

I'm looking at some flights and booking them through VA's site; they're $1850 return in Flexi per person. Codesharing with SQ, that is.

I then go to SQ's site and find the same flights, albeit for $1700 in their Flexi class. I then notice that SQ have a 'Flexi Saver' class which is substantially cheaper than their Flexi class ($1450 return).

I'll be putting my Velocity number down on these flights so I want to know if I book under SQ's 'Flexi Saver' class, do I get the same amount of SC as I would if I booked under their 'Flexi' class?

I.e., do SQ's 'Flexi' and 'Flexi Saver class' match VA's 'Flexi' class for earning SC?

VA says from Melbourne to SQ would be 30 SC in Discount Economy and 60 SC in Full Fare economy - would booking an SQ flight in 'Flexi Saver' earn 60 SC or 30 SC?

Sorry for the long-winded explanation - I just want to be sure of what I'll earn before I book anything!

Also, I'm guessing that if I book my flights under SQ I'll receive only 1 point per mile flown and no 100% bonus for being a plat?

Cheers!

Singapore flexi saver fares generally earn at the 'full economy' rate.

You can confirm yourself by getting the 'fare class' of the ticket during the booking process on the Singapore website (Step 3 i think, you don't need to pay etc.) and then check this code against the status credit earnings on the velocity website.

A good thing about flying SQ is that the majority of Y fares credit as "Full Economy" when crediting to VA! I think it's just the "sweet deals" and "super deals" that credit as 'Discount Economy"

This was my experience, albeit a couple of years ago.
But +1: check the fare family and make sure it's in one of the full economy earning buckets and then you should be good.
VA codeshares are notoriously more expensive than booking through with SQ on their flight numbers directly.

I just completed HBA-SYD-SIN-HKG RTN for a total of 240SC. W class fares booked and sold as SQ but Velocity number quoted! 20-60-40 respectively along with over 11000pts. This was on the SQ fare specials ending 24 and 28 Feb.

So surprised at the earn rate, requalified gold just getting to SIN, so family pooled the rest to my partner who can get silver soon. Points will come back to me anyways :)

I did similar with just SYD-SIN-HKG on a Flexi Saver W Fare , which netted me 200 SC (60-40 x2). If your flexible , you can pick up a fare SYD-xSIN-HKG for around $950 RTN , which is great value for 200 SC. Requaled Gold easily .

I did exactly this last month so checked it out thoroughly beforehand. I went MEL-SIN-Osaka and return. IT was cheaper as you found booking direct with SQ. I booked a flexi-saver which is the equivalent to full economy as far as SC's go. So I collected 60 SC's for each leg for a total haul of 240 SC's. Booking direct with SQ you get to do your own seat selection which you cant if you book the codeshare thru VA site. The only thing you dont get is your status level bonus points. Its about 12,000 points as is, so as platinum you would miss out on 12,000 bonus points. I guess you need to decide if the 12,000 points are worth paying more for. By the way the SC's and points were credited almost straight away to my velocity account so it all worked seamlessly and my status level was printed on my SQ boarding passes as well.

I am getting ~$900 return in Flexi Saver for the above routing in September.

All Flexi Savers are definitely double SCs?

Almost certainly, but it's really easy to check.
Do a dummy booking, click continue after selecting your fare. SQ are now really upfront about the class your fare books into - in this case "Economy (M)"

Then check the Velocity earn table (Status Earn Fare Class| Velocity Frequent Flyer) for SQ - Full fare economy is:
Singapore Airlines*: Y, B, E, M, H, W, L

The asterisk isn't scary - "*Status Credits may not be earned on any Singapore Airlines or SilkAir flights where KrisFlyer miles have been used as a form of payment, irrespective of fare class."
So don't pay for it using KrisFlyer miles, at all, book in a Y, B, E, M, H, W, L fare, win at Velocity status retention!!

Shame you can only upgrade on Y, B, E Class which is Flexi (not the saver) this is normally an extra 500-600

I have been trying out combinations all day.

Flexi Saver pricing appears OK for point to point bookings such as SYD-HKG return etc but once I try multi city such as BNE-CNX/HKG-SYD the entry level Flexi Saver price is OK but once the flights are selected the price goes up ~$200-$250.

I know. You can't have your cake and eat it too. The 200 SCs on first day of new membership year would be great and is half way to Gold status.
