I am looking for advice/recent experiences with checking baggage to its final destination with SQ.

We are flying from Canberra to Singapore on SQ flight, part of one ticket CBR-FRA (with an 8 days stopover in Singapore).
Three hours after landing in Singapore we have Velocity rewards seats flight, also on SQ to Denpasar, though this is a separate booking through Virgin.

Will we be able to check our bags from Canberra to Denpasar
or
do we need to clear customs in Singapore, collect bags, check bags to Denpasar and proceed through customs to transit area again?

Good question, I don't think that it would be possible because you will be on a VA flight number for SIN-DPS but I may be wrong, Seeming as its both SQ metal then they may let you but I doubt it

Redemption tickets are not on VA code they are issued on SQ flight number. You can't even book a VA coded flight commercially on the intra asia sectors unless in conjunction with flight from Australia.

In any event I believe SQ still allow through check of luggage to most non-LCC airlines and almost certainly to themselves. Just show your SIN-DPS itinerary to them when you check in at CBR.

Thanks. Will try as it would save a lot of hassle.
Yes, these are SQ flights throughout, Sin-DPS is a Virgin ticket number and booking though.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I agree with Dajop.

At checkin in CBR present your VA flight details when checking in. You will get boarding passes for CBR-SIN and then SIN-DPS withyour bags going all the way to DPS.

One consideration which I would be considering is using the left luggage facility at Changi. When I've done European trips with an Asian side trip the clothes and luggage I need are entirely different. I would leave my European luggage in Changi and just take my Bali clothes to DPS. I would do this so that I don't have so much luggage in Bali to move around and to keep track of.

Also, remember there is no longer the on arrival visa charge at DPS.

I was in Bali just three weeks ago. It's a great time of year to be there.

Just reporting on my earlier question:

We had no problems checking the baggage from Canberra to Denpasar on 2 different bookings. All worked out well and Singapore Airlines were great.

After a very positive experience with Singapore Airlines ......

Now I am facing the same issue with British Airways. I have one booking with BA terminating at London Heathrow T5 and another booking QFF reward flight with BA starting at London Heathrow T5.

The result of my enquiry with BA on whether I will be able to check my luggage all the way through for both bookings, is astounding. WATCH OUT EVERYONE!

"I'm so sorry to disappoint you, however a recent policy change across all the oneworld airlines means that customers can now only through-check their hold baggage if all the flights in their itinerary are on the same ticket (or in the same booking, if the flights are all with British Airways and oneworld carriers).

Customers travelling on separate tickets, issued from separate booking references, who have baggage to check in will need to note the following information:
- Airport 'Minimum Connecting Times' won't apply to their journey - they'll need to leave much longer between flights they book
- They'll have to collect their bags on arrival after each flight, before making their way to to the check-in area for their next flight
- Different baggage allowances may apply to each flight - only 'through tickets' qualify for the "most significant baggage allowance" policy
- If there's any disruption to one flight in their journey, they will need to make their own adjustments to any connecting flights that are on a separate ticket, at their own expense. Additionally, only the actual disrupted flight would be eligible for normal compensation (i.e. EU Legislation) - customers can't claim any costs associated to other flights they're unable to travel on as a result of that disruption."

This has been widely publicised...I'm surprised any AFF subscriber would be unaware of it....

I'm not sure how "astounding "it is...given most Oneworld airlines would give the same answer....

Actually no they wouldn't, many still allow transfers to their own flights on separate bookings. AFAIK, QF->QF, MH->MH, CX->CX is still OK. BA, which is just a LCC in drag ;), won't. I don't think AA will either, but happy to be corrected.

Obviously not everyone is across all AFF news; well I am not. Seeing not every airline is equal, it's hard to know what each of them will do this week... unless you are on the AFF drip:cool:

As to this particular behaviour of BA being "astounding" to me, when you consider airlines are doing us favours by providing quality service (for a lot of money we pay), then it is not ASTOUNDING.
I am used to customers being more important than service withdrawal; all to save the $$. Hence I find the lack of customer focus on part of BA and similar airlines astounding and definitely will chose different airlines in the future vis Singapore Airlines.

Fair enough.... but if baggage checking across separate tickets IS a deal killer for you will likely find only a small number of airlines to fly!

And check SQ's rules if you are NOT getting on another SQ flight......you might be disappointed.

As it currently stands, SQ do allow through checking of baggage - even on separate tickets - to anyone they have an interline agreement with. So they will through check to most legacy/formerly-known-as-full-service carriers. They will not through check to LCC's.

The only port I've read this can be a problem is JFK for some reason.

Add QF to EK to the list.
