Just picked up a QR business class (I) round-trip fare Colombo (CMB) - Rome (FCO) for approx $1,230 AUD. I had previously booked a UA award for this trip, but the QR fare was better value. Hard to beat IMHO...

Been looking at that one as well. Is there an easy way from Australia to CMB though? I can't seem to find much under $1,000 return in Y without going to a LCC...

I usually fly to CMB using either Frequent flyer points or a LCC or a combination of both. Yesterday I booked Air Asia KUL-CMB-KUL for June for approx AUD $200 return. Team this up with a LCC promo and the total return fare to CMB can be less than $600.

I can also fly SYD-KUL-SYD on TG or SQ for 35,000 UA FF miles and then pay for the short hop over to CMB on Air Asia, if I want a little more in the way of creature comforts.

The fare on QR seems to be creeping up in LK rupees, as it had increased by about $50 when I checked it today.

Great fare. Did the A346 in J DOH-CMB-DOH myself last month. Try to snag a row 1 seat if you can. Larger foot rest space. Discussed here on FT.

Thanks for that. The CMB-DOH-CMB flights are on a 777 and the DOH-FCO-DOH flights are a 332. Either way, it should be quite comfortable.

How do you find these fares? That's a steal!

A good place to start is Premium Fare Deals - FlyerTalk Forums, which often discusses good deals in business/first class. Other times I find these sort of deals by looking at promos on airline websites, eg www.qatarairways.com, (you can subscribe) or travel agent's websites such as www.expedia.com.sg. Starting your premium class journey in such places as CMB and BKK often yields better fares.

Thanks Clifford. I am planning to travel to Colombo mid next year, to see relatives. I might look into extending the trip to someplace else and taking advantage of a cheap business class fare.

So in getting to Colombo, once just looks for cheap flights ex-Australia to there? Or uses points to get to Colombo for example.

I tend to use a combination of points and LCC fares. For example, you could fly MEL-KUL-MEL on Air Asia, Jetstar or Scoot for say $400 return (when it's on promo), and fly KUL-CMB on Air Asia for approx $200 return. That's about the cheapest way to do it. Alternatively you could use points for part or all of the journey.
