I just received an email from Hertz entitled "Upgrade to Hertz #1 Club Gold for free!".

When you follow the links it takes you to a page that requires you to provide a credit card number, and in the fine print it reads "Annual Membership Fee is $ 60". I refused to go any further, but presumably the first year is free, and then you will cop a $60 fee each year thereafter. However, this is not stated anywhere except for that 5 word piece of fine print.

That's not really FREE Hertz, and also not really HONEST.

I got an offer from Hertz in 2007.

Upgrade to Hertz #1 Club Gold for free - FOR LIFE. I took it....

If they wanted to charge me, they wouldn't know my cc and address. I wouldn't worry, 1 club gold has been free for Australians for ages.

I didn't know that, you learn something new everyday.

I was in the US when I got the offer though, not living in Oz. Wonder if its free in USA.

The "free upgrade" web page requires full address and credit card number to proceed !!

Given the specials they had on offer to gold members were good this year, I would be going for it if I was not already a member, the 50% off luxury and green collections was great!

The reason they require a Credit Card number is one of the No1 Gold benefits is Gold Canopy or similar service, so no more paperwork with each rental. Your credit card is kept on file, and all rental paperwork is pre completed , so all you need to do is show your driver's license as you drive through the exit.

Saves time with every rental, and the specials are fantastic. No 1 Gold for more years than I care to remember, and never a problem with being charged for the benefit!

You can have my Hertz #1 Gold membership. Can't remember how long I have had it but I cannot use it as it does not work for any of my bookings.

Can't be bothered chasing up Hertz to fix it either as I do not rent that often and Europcar, for now, is much more appealing.

Gold has just got even more valuable! Our fantastic Hertz Gold Plus Rewards promotion gives you 800 bonus points* – as long as you register before 30th April 2012. That's enough for a Weekend Reward Day (free time and mileage for a weekend day's rental). And what's more, for every rental that you complete during this time you'll earn an extra 100 points per day, bringing you even closer to your next Reward day.*

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Very tempting! When did you receive this and what level are you? I'm #1 Club Gold who qualified for 5 star last year - haven't received this!

I thought I would do the only sensible thing and ask Hertz about my concerns as outlined in the OP.

I sent an email to the link in the offer email, worded as follows:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I received the “Upgrade to Hertz #1 Club Gold for free!” offer in December, however when I click through to the “Upgrade to Gold” page it states on that page that the annual membership fee is $60. I am confused, what exactly is the “free” offer?

Thanks,
"Baysider"
