Hi
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help me out here. My wife and I have a collection of points in Qantas FF and Skywards that we'd like to use up for an upgrade for me, particularly the skywards ones...

I have approx 52000 FF points
I have approx 9000 SW points
My wife has approx 48000 SW points

I am flying MEL to GLA via Dubai later this year and would like to somehow use the points on an upgrade to Business, either leg. My wife is flying with our 3 wee kids and my MIL so there is no point her using them (Im not just being selfish here!) We will be using the Emirates/Qantas code-share route.

My understanding is it would cost 72000 to upgrade for the Melbourne - Dubai leg. I cant find out what it would cost for the Dubai-Glasgow leg.

My questions are:
How can I find out how many FF points are required to upgrade Dubai-Glasgow?
Can we transfer points between airlines? (I dont think so)
Is there a free way my wife can transfer her SW points to me without the rather high price making it pointless?
If not, can my wife use her points to upgrade me if she isn't flying with me? (And it is less than 61000)

In other words, are there any experts out there that can tell me how (if even possible) I can pool these points together somehow to upgrade me for one of the legs from Melbourne-Dubai-Glasgow?

This may be a bit obvious and I apologise if Ive come off a bit stupid but we've never really looked into this before and its a bit of a rabbit warren.

Cheers.

You cannot pool them together.

The main way you can use points from two different programs on the one trip is to use each towardsa one way redemption.

One exception to pooling is that one can swap points between the VA and SQ program, but you losea % of your points on each transfer.

I presume that you mean that you are doing the MEL-DXB leg on QF, then the DXB - GLA on EK? You can't use points from one program to upgrade on the other airline's plane, regardless of which codeshare number you booked under.

As above, you can't pool between programs, and you don't have enough QF points for economy to business if you bought a discount fare as opposed to a flex fare. You could consider Premium economy for 45000 as an alternative. Worth checking it's not a flex fare which would mean you'd have enough points to request business - if you attempt an upgrade on the QF website it will tell you the points required for your fare.
I'm less familiar with Skywards so can't offer too much advice, but the site https://www.emirates.com/account/english/miles-calculator/miles-calculator.aspx will tell you the points required for your fare. I can't see if there is a way to get someone else to upgrade for you - I think you need to ring the call centre and ask. There is an option to transfer miles but it's $25USD per 1000 miles and seems to have a limit so may not be of benefit to you.

Good luck.

Is it possible to transfer your SW points to the wife? That might be better to do that, since 9000 points alone aren't that useful.
