Cathay Pacific Airways lose 5 Star Ranking status for their Hong Kong Airport First and Business Class Pier and Wing lounges.

Totally farcical IMO. Did CX forget to send their annual cheque to Skytrax or something?

I mean, sure there's some overcrowding at peak times due to the number of refugees from QF and BA flights. Both lounges were designed and built pre-oneworld and weren't conceived to accomodate so many pax. But I happen to think that the amenities are still top notch and amongst the greats in the world of airline lounges.

Any indication what lounges are 5* now? I assume the FCT at FRA?

If one wanted to critique the CX lounges the things I see them "missing" are a Spa and food cooked to order rather than a buffet... I must get round to see some of these much better lounges that they refer to...

I went to their website and they quote QF/BA lounges as 4 star. These people are MAD.

Anyone can post a review - 'nuff said

IMHO - they have a similar credibility as "the Freddies"

Great title QF009!!

Does anyone actually take the reviews on Skytrax seriously? It is like asking another person's advice on which is the best economy seat. The best way to rate a lounge is to visit that lounge first....

I actually find Skytrax passenger reviews quite helpful, as long as you look at overall themes, and not individual reviews (bearing in mind even on the best airline in the world, bad experiences are going to happen at some stage).

To be fair to the vast majority of posters on Skytrax, if you actually read the passenger reviews of the Cathay Lounges at HKG, they are generally pretty positive.

I think the article linked by QF009 in his post, actually referred to a review done by Skytrash organisation itself, not the people out there who contribute to the site. And to echo most views above I think they are way off the mark. If the CX HKG lounges are 3 star - what does that make most Admirals Clubs, or for that matter any off the minor lounges at Australian intl airports???

QF009 must be close to the mark ... think CX must have forgoten to send their annual cheque to Skytrax.

Re: Skytrash strikes again: CX HKG lounges demoted to 3 stars

I was in the CX F pier lounge, about 10 days ago. Had a 8hr layover there, and was horribly sick (24hr bug!!) the whole time I was there. I can't tell you how thankful I was to be able to have a cabana to sleep & shower in for the entire layover. Not sure if I would have made my next flight without it. It was a real lifesaver.

CX gets 5 stars from me (for the cabanas), as does QF Sydney (for the food), and LHR BA T5 (for the design!), FWIW. I am very grateful to have access to all of them.

I've sent in some reviews, both negative and positive that've never been posted. Which suggests that they're only posted selectively. One can only speculate as to the selection criteria.

Also it is often a case of bad news is loudest. I mean, no one is going to post a "Regular, Uneventful flight on X airline" review.

Or the laff-riot Tripadvisor ratings - as a HKG example, did you know that the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel is rated higher than the Peninsula? All the money I've wasted staying Grand Deluxe at the Pen, when I could have been more comfortable out at Disney...

I think that's a bit harsh. The ratings on TripAdvisor aren't just on "comfort" but what you get for your money.

That said Disney is number 6, and the Pen is number 7. If you look through the 140 reviews of the Pen, there's one bad one (1/5 stars) that probably drags the Pen's average down just a tad below Disney.

Otherwise, the top 5 hotels (Langham, IC, Conrad, Shangri-La, Four Seasons) are probably the type that you are expecting.

I wouldn't condemm TripAdvisor based on this one little anomaly.

And maybe you should stay out at Disney - you might be pleasantly surprised :)

My perception of "value" is obviously different to many of the contributors to the site.

Agree ,its like the email I got recently from DJ "suggesting" I might like to vote for them. The results end up as meaningful as a Zimbabwe election
and as much credibility (by that I mean both the poll and the airline)

Not just DJ that sends those emails.....

The rankings refer to "popularity index" ( whatever that is), not how good a hotel is.

How do you figure that? The type of hotels that you appear to like dominate the top positions for HK.

There is a total of *one* anomaly. And given that both the Pen and the Disney have 4.5/5 it would appear that the one or two bad reviews given to the Pen (someone gave it 1/5) must have marginally dragged down the average, so that it's less than the Disney (which has far fewer reviews, so possibly no one's had a terrible experience there)

And because of this, you think that "many" of the contributors think of value differently? It would appear that you and I have a different concept of mathematics.

Is there a reason why the title on this thread changed from Skytrash to Skytrax?
