I am going over to Singapore F1 next weekend..

First time to Singapore.. Wondering if I am correct in getting to Orchard station I just go to City Hall and change

I assume the MRT is the most cost effective option

Thanks for any tips

Without looking at the map, I can't comment. However the MRT is clean, quick and runs very frequently. Taxis and ride share services are very cheap in Singapore too. So if there are a few of you travelling, consider that too.

Enjoy though. Singapore is an amazing, fun city.

Assuming your'e coming from the airport, that would be right. It may be the most cost effective, but we find that cabs in Singapore are one of the cheapest places around. Last time we used the train coming from the airport, it required a platform change after one or two stops, and then every stop on the way to City Hall. Suggest you cab it to the hotel on arrival, and MRT thereafter, and cab back to the airport. Enjoy the race, from memory, this is the last one there?

First change is across the platform at Tanah Merah (two stops from airport), then again at City Hall. As per Franky's advice taxis are inexpensive, and usually reasonably priced getting to/from the airport, and if you are arriving at T1 I wouldn't even consider MRT, as you also have to get skytrain to get to the MRT station at the airport. You can also download the Grab app and set up a Grab account (can pay with cash or credit card), a reliable ridesharing service, and usually cheaper than taxis for journeys originating at Changi. (noting: Uber gave up in SE Asia and "merged" with Grab).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Great thanks for the tips..

Also, the race has been extended for another 4 years, so now at least until 2021

The MRT line at the airport is on a 2 stop spur on the East West line. You need to change between the spur and the main line at Tenah Merah. Then change to the North South Line at City Hall to get to Orchard.

If you are going to use the MRT, get an ezlink card. They are much like the Myki, MyWay, Opal, etc travel cards in Australia.

I can certainly help you with MRT routing but I am not entirely sure what your start and end point are - are you looking to go from a hotel in Orchard to the F1 gates at Marina Bay? If so, the correct station depends on your gate:

Gate 1 - Lavender MRT
Gate 2 - Promenade MRT
Gate 3 - City Hall or Esplanade
Gate 4 - Raffles Place
Gate 7 - Esplanade
Gate 8 - Bayfront
Gate 9 - Promenade

Note that all of these are on different MRT lines (Purple/NE, Red(NS)/Green(EW), Yellow CC) so routing is going to depend on your source and destination.

Just for reference, about 3 weeks ago my cab fares between my hotel (in the City Hall area) and the airport were less that SG$20 each way, and that was in peak hour both ways; pretty cheap for the convenience.

Personally, having lived in Singapore for many years, I'd avoid taking the train to the airport almost universally (only exception for me is after I drop someone off there). It's quite some way out to the east, and goes right through a busy business district. The spur adds a bit of time on (for Singapore standards) to the journey and unless your timing is good, you'll at some point merge in with a busy and unforgiving station and get squeezed with your luggage. As whughes3 says, it's really not very expensive at all to take a cab from the airport and it's something you do twice per trip max, whereas getting around Singapore once you've checked in and not carrying luggage is something that should definitely be done by MRT.

Last time I got in a taxi in SIN the driver decided that road rage was the way to deal with someone cutting in front him. This went on for 5 minutes or so and a few red lights and cursing in Mandarin. Not a pleasant experience.

Have a 12 hour transit Christmas Day arriving 8:00pm and may head off to Casino for a few hours. Train out and taxi back. Quite happy to use MRT if travelling alone and don't see the MRT as an inconvenience.

Download the Grab app before you go, no need to bother with the MRT which I find is generally not convenient when trying to get around without fuss

As well as the EZLink card (or Singapore equivalent tag on / off card most Aussies would use) there is an unlimited travel card at S$10/day with a S$10 deposit. Sold in the airport MRT terminal (as well as some other stations) Some technicalities relating to calendar day usage and advance purchase.
Worth it if going to places like the zoo.

Happy wandering
Fred
