I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from SQ today informing me of a change with my seating arrangements on my SIN-MEL SQ227 flight in November since my pre-selected seats "...are no longer valid due to a change of aircraft from B747-400 to Airbus 380." :D

And there was a second email from SQ pointing to this media release of 15 July 2009 (http://www.singaporeair.com/saa/en_UK/content/local/AU/before/LocalPressReleases/071509.pdf):

"

Australia becomes first Singapore Airlines market to boast dual superjumbo ports
[FONT=FMPDB B+ Laudatio BQ,Laudatio BQ][FONT=FMPDB B+ Laudatio BQ,Laudatio BQ]From 29 September 2009 customers travelling between Singapore and Melbourne will enjoy an unrivalled flight experience on Singapore Airlines’ superjumbo Airbus A380. When the new service begins, Melbourne will become the second city in Australia and sixth city in the Airline’s network to receive the A380 – highlighting the ever expanding services being provided to Australian customers by the international carrier. ....

The daily A380 flights will replace an existing daily Boeing 747-400 service to Melbourne. SQ227 will depart Singapore Changi Airport at 2100hrs and arrive in Melbourne at 0610hrs the next day (0710hrs from 4 October 2009 due to daylight savings). On the return leg, SQ228 will depart Melbourne at 1550hrs (1650hrs from 4 October 2009) and touchdown in Singapore at 2140hrs. "

Yes I had two award flights on the 744 with 4 seats in J....so when then first announced the change to the A380 I checked on-line and noticed that my seat allocations had been "lost'...so I quickly made new selections and had first choice on both flights to get my peferred seats.. :D

Just flew SIN-SYD on an SQ 380.

It was totally full and quite squishy.

So if you're in Y, I wouldn't get too excited about it.

lovetravellingoz is in J - sohas reason to get excited , as J on 744 has morphed into and A380 which is IMHO a much better product. And moreso if travelling on saver awards, as unless a change in a/c type happens (like this) it's nigh on impossible to get saver awards in the new J.

For Y - I wouldn't expect anything other than squishy, it's still Y (although according to seat guru seats are 1.5" wider)! But the screens/IFE should be better than the 744's which are starting to get a bit tired. Were you upstairs or downstairs? I have heard that upstairs (2-4-2) is better than downstairs (3-4-3).

Thank you SIA!! My flight to/from Singapore have been changed to A380. I deliberately choose 747 for my flight redemption because of "better" comfort level with the maximum bang for Business Saver award! Now, I am in 15A to Singapore and 15K on the way back, all for 76,500 Points!!!

Compare that to Qantas Business Class flight to Perth 80,000 points... what a rip off! (Sigh... why can't we adopt SIA as our National carrier instead of the "Mean Spirit of Sydney")

joeymelb,

Welcome to AFF.

The argument of earn versus burn rates of the various airlines gets covered quiet a lot here and on FT. There is no simple answer other than we must operate within what is available. Sometimes they are better and sometimes they are worse.

Have a great SQ and A380 experience. :D

Like I wish we can churn credit card bonuses, and buy Presidential coins... as our American friends can.
